All tigers, lion, brown bear look depressive & tired looking in their eyes.
Maybe they get sick with the visitors / cameras.
Only the birds have those alert 'keep the eyes on you' sign.

I think that you have a point, but fortunately my local zoo is very good, meaning we have good habitats and the zookeepers take great care of the animals, so I don't really experience that so much at my local zoo. I'm happy to say it's not something I've seen firsthand, but I do see it on the photographs I've viewed on this site.
