Hello everyone.

I come to you puter guros form a photography edit view of my future build. Also will be doing some gaming as well.

CPU: Intel i7-980x (external link)
Mobo: EVGA141-GT-E770-A1 (external link)
PSU: Corsair CMPSU 850TX 850w (external link)
GPU: XFX ATI 5870 (external link) or the Saphire HD5870 (external link)
RAM: Tripple Chanel 6gb Corsair Dominator (external link)
FAN: noctua NH-D14 with a third added 120mm fan (external link) the Extra Fan (external link)
CASE: Antec 1200 (external link) or the Corsair 800d (external link)
HDD: Can't decide if I want to go SSD or standard HDD 7200rpm 1TB drives. Any recomendations on HDDs will be great!

and as an added bonus I get a gift: Capcom Lost Planet 2 ;) Most likely will go to the trash.

So what are your guys thoughts? I most likely will OC the CUP to around 4Ghz for a stable 24/7 OC.

Thanks in advance

Sevan

I thought you were a Mac guy?

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

Not going with the Mac Pro huh?

Going for the 980 and then planning to use a HDD? I'd spend some bucks for a nice big SSD or use a couple in RAID. Shame to have all that CPU power and use a slow HDD.

I think you need to bump it up to 12GB of RAM. I've got a 930, and going from 6GB to 12GB made quite a difference when playing with the 5DmkII's files (mainly with edits dealing with multiple files, like HDRs, panoramas, and so on).

Also, the PSU is overkill. Drop it to around 650W.

And the price/performance of that ram is crap. G-Skill Pi' (external link)s are by far a better purchase, for only a tiny bit more.

Don't remind me Tony, this will run me as is $2258 The MAC Pro HEX core is $4200 but the xenon westmiere and 8GB ram Same GPU and 1TB HDD. The Cost is what is killing me man. :( I mean I love my Power Mac G5 with like 12GB of ram, so much ram I only see like 5-6gb used.

I might do another set of the RAM but for now this is a starting point. Thanks for the G-Skill link, I love there ram, wonder why I missed that one. You think 650w will be enough?

Thanks for hints. ;)

650W is definitely enough, but you know what? Now that I think about it, 850W gives you more upgrade room. 650W won't let you add a second video card or anything in case you decide to later.

I was going to go CrossfireX, but then again I don't want any issues with photoshop. It would only be handy for gaming on a 30" display for mad FPS and I really don't care about FPS in gaming. I think the single 5870 will handle a 30" display even for gaming.

What is the better of these three rams?

Yeah the 5870 can handle it well unless you want to max AA and stuff too - then it becomes a slideshow.

Out of those three rams the best - technically - are the Dominators. But the middle ones are 99.9% of the performance for cheaper, and then for the same price there are these (external link) which are better than all of them.

Are you overclocking? If not I would think the stock cooler would be more than adequate:

Also, I'd probably go for a mid tower like the the Antek 900 or Three Hundred case unless you really need 12 bays. My Three Hundred came with 4 fans which keeps my i7-930 rig (which is OC'd to get 1600 for the RAM) pretty cool even with all of the fans at minimum speed.

Also an 850W PSU sounds pretty big. If you're going to load up all of those bays maybe you'll need it though.

Maybe consider 8GB RAM instead of 6 and a 120GB SSD for your boot drive.

Alright, thanks. Maybe the 850w is the one I will go with then I have room for one more 5870 for some insane gaming. But then again when will I have time for hard core gaming? Hahahha i think a single 5870 will do.

He did say he was overclocking, right in the first post :)

Maybe consider 8GB RAM instead of 6 and a 120GB SSD for your boot drive.

8GB RAM will no longer run in triple channel, and will become slower.

But I agree on the SSD.

So build it on a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5 and put OS X on it.

Thanks Bob, Yess gonna do a OC to around 4Ghz for a 24/7 stable OC. As for the bays maybe around 4-6 HDDs in few raid setups. 120gb SSD just sounds cheaper, phew.
