So build it on a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5 and put OS X on it.

Hahahaha I have seen the MAC OSx setup on a PC man it looks pretty tricky to do it. Would rather run win 7, although I will miss the Exposé & Spaces and the little one click DOCK and all the other cool little things. :(:(:(

With the right board, a hackintosh is a piece of cake.

If it doesn't work, then just install Win 7 on it. If it does work, you can dual boot. You just have to use the right board - in this case the Gigabyte.

Did RAM drop in price in the past two months? Based on that I'd get 12GB. Also, I misread your first post and see that you are OC'ing. I'd really like to see a review of the stock cpu cooler versus 4-5 of the better aftermarket ones in an OC'd system to see how much advantage they have.

Thanks Bob, Yess gonna do a OC to around 4Ghz for a 24/7 stable OC. As for the bays maybe around 4-6 HDDs in few raid setups. 120gb SSD just sounds cheaper, phew.

I have a reasonable number of software titles and I'm only using 62 GB of my 160 GB boot drive SSD. Also, of the 160GB only 148 is usable. Based on this going with 160GB was a bit of a waste where I would have had plenty of excess capacity with 120GB. 80 would have been too small.

A bit over-sized is supposed to be a good thing with an SSD.

I've really been impressed with Win 7 64bit. Vista was great after a few service packs but Win 7 has been excellent since it's initial release.

Good point Bob, now you only have the OS, and all your apps like LR, CSx etc.... and store all the images on the standard HDD drives right? All you actions and LR catalogs on the SSD or the regular HDDs? But when it comes to SSD I am totally clueless, what should I looks for and avoid?

Correct, I have my OS and all of my apps on the SSD and have my data on a 1.5TB WD Caviar Black. My PS actions are on the SSD (don't use LR). I back-up to a couple of external drives.

There was a great thread here on SSDs that started a couple of weeks ago. I'll look for it. :)

Thanks Bob, now looking at these two 120gb SSDs

I'm going to say what most other people have said, that CPU could be wasted. Go for the 930 or 940 or whatever's current in the midrange. 850W PS is nuts, my PC uses 200W when it's going full speed on all drives and cores.

SSD get something Sandforce based, just use it for US, programs, and cache. 80GB is heaps. Try these (external link). The Onyx 2 is meant to be great, and great value (I think I got that name right). Get a couple of WD black drives for data.

Ram can be easily upgraded. Video cards can be easily upgraded. Doing a Hacintosh isn't meant to be too hard these days, if you buy the right parts.

You can probably spend 30% less and get similar performance (guess). Spend that 30% on upgrades in 2 years and i'll jump another 50% in speed.

Agree with all of what you said Tim except 80GB being heaps for the SSD. It might be, but it really depends on the number/size of applications intended to be installed. With what I have installed right now If I had an 80GB drive I'd have something like 71 GB usable and only 10GB spare capacity. Based on that I think 80GB is a bit too small for me ... but the 160GB drive I bought is too big.
