Ooo, what would be the price of the 600mm f/5.6? something closer to the EF 400mm f/5.6's would be awesome! Like $2000 or below.

I'm not interested in those lenses.

Canon, where is the new 24-70?

If Canon came out with a 600mm f/5.6 in the 2K range I would be the first in line.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

The bottom section of that article catches my interest even more :) and I quote:

"Another Canon patent is for a sensor that can capture light with the help of micro lenses (Leica uses this technology in the M9, maybe Canon is preparing for their mirrorless camera)"

I took another look at the lens arrangement for this, and the front element is labelled "DO".

This would make this a big brother to the 400mm f/4 DO lens, not cheap.

Why would you come into the rumors section and spoil the party? Do you break into kindergarten classes yelling the truth about Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny?

Let us eat our cake.

I have been harping about a 600 5.6 for a long time. Many folks just said get a 300 2.8 and a 2X (which I have used extensively).A native 600 5.6 would be much much better in IQ and in weight. Ala the weight compaison of the 70-200 2.8 + 2X versus the 400 5.6... Very noticeable.

A 600/5.6 would be $7000 easy. $2000 would be way too optimistic

It'll be as tall as a 400 IS or 400 IS II.

It shares the same front element diameter as the 200/2L IS, 300/2.8L IS and 400/4 DO IS.

It should weigh between 1.5-2.5kg! making it a great hand holdable birds in flight lens.

The 400 DO F4 costs about $5K or $6K (not sure about US prices). The 600 F5.6 (if it ever comes to fruition) would cost more than the 400 DO F4 surely? You pay a premium for that reduced weight..............

As both have about 100mm apertures and similar levels of complexity and construction quality, I would say the pricing should be within the same ballpark.

For all we know, it is a new Canon digital large format portrait prime, though. ;)

A $2,000 600mm F5.6 would not not be a L series lens. Any L series telephoto with over 100mm front objective will cost at least $4,000. Like others said a 600mm F5.6 L would be a $5,000 lens.
