Personal attacks on, or ridicule of a POTN member against another member are strongly frowned upon. And afaik, a tos violation.

As a suggestion, perhaps this should be extended to others. I.e., personal attacks against people who are not part of this forum.

As an example, the obvious (Ken Rockwell) comes to mind. When Ken writes something relevant about photography, by all means, discuss it.

But a post where the subject is to ridicule or attack the person (ken or anybody else) and is not something relevant to photography and only targets the personality serves no purpose and is certainly not productive.

Another point to consider is that ridicule or attack of a person who is not a member of POTN is, in essence, even more egregious than on a POTN member because they are not present to defend themself whereas the POTN member is.

Just a suggestion, mind you. Perhaps when the title of a thread appears to be about the person or personality, as opposed to something to do with their participation in photography, those threads should be deleted.

sounds good, i too noticed some 'over the line' personal comments towards some, which isn't right.
BUT some original posters can't take some critism well and get all defensive, SOME do, not all.

Report the threads/posts then we will look at them. Moderators can't read every single post so we rely on members reporting posts that are inappropriate one way or another.

Bash Ken Rockwell threads are ususally closed pretty quickly.

Tommy, I appreciate that but I was not talking about any specific thread. I was just rambling philosophically.

Just a general thought that threads about people or personalities as opposed to their work, when they happen to be caught by a mod, are deleted.

examples subjects:

"stupid ken rockwell writes another stupid article about hdr"

Yes, "stupid ken rockwell" is an objectionable reference and should not be used, but the thread is about an article, not ken himself so it would be allowed.

However,

"ken rockwell is stupid"

is about the person, not his writings, and would be deleted.

As I said, just a generic suggestion.

But my reply is the same. If you see threads/posts like that then report them.

I look at threads that bash people like real-life conversations I don't want to be a part of. So I just ignore it and move on.
