I want a 35L. I blame this forum. Would there be a huge improvement over my 17-55 in IQ? I love prime lenses and use my 60 macro whenever I can but i want a wider prime. I'm old school and used an AT1 and a 50mm f1.4 only for about 15 years. Would the 35L and my 7D make me as happy?

Save your money unless you are planning on going to full frame. The Sigma 30 is a fine lens.

See the Samyang 35 when it gets announced as well.

I'm in your same position. I'm debating between the 17-55 and 24L II.... I don't think it is really going to come down to image quality between the 2 though, because there isn't that much of a difference (I have the 17-55 and rented the 24L II for a couple of weeks to do some comparisons). Ultimately, for me, I just want to be able to shoot no-flash low-light photos and can't with my 17-55, so I have about decided on the prime.

between the sigma 30 and the 35L... youre better off getting the sigma on a crop and saving like 1000 bucks

i have used both on a crop and dont see how the 35L is $1000 better. unless youre a canon brand junky and must have the red ring

I had both Siggy 30mm and 35L on FF now and there is no comparison... Siggy was good, but 35L is in another class...

I agree that the 35L is magic on the 5D, not so much with a crop body. So i've recommend sticking with the 17-55 for now until you moved on to FF later if you decide to move that direction.

I hear this a lot, so maybe someone can clear this up for me... Why does everyone say the 35L is so great on FF, but not on crop? I mean, what makes the 35L so much different on a crop, aside from the difference in focal length?

Nothing. It'll be a bit tighter, but the lens still retains it's color, contrast & wide-open look — crop bodies don't change those things.

FWIW, I lent my 35L to a friend with a crop body (550D) and he loved it. Loved the focal length, loved the way the lens rendered. Even I liked it on the crop body. It's just a damned good lens.

35mm is a classic focal length on full frame. it gives a special look.

lenses like 35L and 24L ii are very expensive and built for full frame. corp cameras won't need the edge sharpness performance on these lens and are paying a premium for it anyways.

30mm sigma is much more economical and reasionable of a choice compared to 35L on crop. you are not paying for the extra edge performance you don't use on a crop sensor. and the sigma 30mm (also sigma 50mm) are very good on their own.

24 f1.4 rocks on FF or crop. Low light ability and DOF control is amazing.
