So, I've gotten a decent opportunity with the local paper here in Denver to shoot concerts for them. Its not a paying gig. I pretty much trade access for use. I get access, they get to use the photos, and barring anything I have to sign with a band prior to a gig I own the photos to sell.

So, now I seem to have a decent opportunity to make some money if I can get back in the groove and produce some decent work, but self promotion is not my strong suit. And lets just say that they're not just coming to me magically ;) I know that I can get back in to form with photography (shooting in challenging light again has been quite the rude awakening) but I'm pretty clueless on the business and marketing side, especially in knowing where the market even is... Magazines? Websites? Personal sales/momentos to those who were there?

So, I guess my question here is how are you concert photographers (or you photographers who shoot concerts ) making the time pay off? Are you hired for the show or are you in an arrangement similar to mine? If you're not there on paid assignment how are you pushing the sales of the photographs?

I don't need to survive off the money as this isn't my day job and even though I went to school for photography I actually quite enjoy my day job as a web developer. I do (hopefully) know not to undervalue myself but my goal here is to be able to finance the habit (more gear and the like).

I very much appreciate any and all advice here.

Thanks!

Interesting. Thanks!
The comments in that are worthwhile too.

Read the article Narlus posted. Very tough. I know some that make a little for wire services, but they are also forced to sit through events they loathe. Tough to get in a wire service gig and once you do how many bad concerts are you going to sit through before shooting ones you like? Talked to a guy in the pit and he went on and on about having to shoot all the tween bands and getting fewer indie/alt rock gigs. From a wire house perspective, they want pictures of the most popular acts, and for folks like me, I want nothing to do with almost all of those acts. Pitchfolk, NME, etc usually pay nothing, so for us it usually is a job of love.

I get most my work from local acts, which still is not much. Luckily I have a successful day gig and a good network that lets me shoot when I want.

Too many people in the front row with their 14mp point and shoot giving pictures away for free...

Ya know? I still have yet to meet but one writer from Reverb. Weird.

Shooting the Old 97's in Boulder tonight for a different mag 'round here.

Another question:

REVERB only owns the rights to the photos for the first 48 hours and I recently got hooked up with a wire service (retna) - am I able to dump all the photos I've got on there and hope someone buys?

You actually need to wait 3 days before publishing elsewhere per the freelancers agreement. I take that as 3 days before it appears, so submission in that time frame as long at it doesn't appear in that first 72 hours its OK.

It also appears that this 72 hour period is a restriction within Colorado and that it doesn't apply to publishers outside of Colorado.

dont do anything for free

you cannot sell your photos unless it is for editorial (wire services, newspaper, magazine, etc) purposes

Most of my income from the band itself, the promoter, or sponsor.

bannedPermanent ban

If I had to pay my mortgage by shooting concerts, I'd be living in a tent. I do earn some money from it from time to time, but those instances are few and far between (although it has picked up lately).

Have I shot for free? Oh yeah. Doing so has led to some particularly well paying gigs. But, again, that's a rarity...
