So I picked up some YN462s . . . dumb idea, I know (the eBay auction site said they were supposed to be YN460 ii's, but try returning something that took 2+ weeks to come from China)

I am trying to set up mini inputs on both the units I have and I cannot get it to work. I am going to drop by the store tomorrow to get some different cables and mini ports to see if I have better luck.

But! Would anyone with confidence mind directing me as to what should go where to make the mini-input work, or even MS Paint up my attached shot? I've tried every which combination and no luck.

Are you trying to add a 3.5mm plug? just google "Yongnuo 3.5mm"

or spend $5 for an adapter

It should not be too difficult. There are only two wires and only two terminals on a mono jack. You are using a mono jack right? I am not sure if polarity will make a difference here but if it does not work one way, switch the two wires around. All you are doing is shorting the red and black wires together to fire the flash.

I have adapters, and I'm tired of using them. Good ones are more expensive, they're flimsy, and the make carrying around a fully loaded strobe kit risky, my strobes fall off sometimes.

Putting the port directly in the unit is cheaper and make the flash sturdier.

Show us how you wired the jack and we might be able to tell you why it's not working.

Its currently not wired, I am going to try it again tonight.

But my guess is the same as others', polarity I didnt think should make a difference. I mean, there are literally only 6 ways this could go, with only 3 connectors to the hotshoe since theres no ettl. One wire to the center, then the 2nd wire to either the left which leads no where, or the right which leads back to the head.

I would say that it is going to be the two terminals with wires connected to them. If you can short the red and black wires and the flash fires, this is where you are going to connect the new jack. The new cameras do not seem to have a contact switch in them like the film days so that is where the polarity is going to come into play. Just be sure to use mono cords and jacks. Stereo stuff will not work.

Yes, basically, you're talking about just two wires. The one going to the side of the foot (the black one) should go the the sleeve of the jack and the one going to the center of the hotshoe foot (the red one) should go to the tip.

I know this is wrong, this is just the point where I gave up. I had already tried both ways to the red and black wires/connectors. I confirmed its all mono I'm using, and I confirmed I haven't broken the unit either, it still works when I put it back together.

When its all soldered together with the port but no cable, it still works too, as does the test fire button. As soon as I plug a cable in (in any configuration that I soldered it together) it ceases working or test firing. I am at a loss, but this should not be that hard . . . I've modded a Playstation 2 with a mod chip successfully before, for heaven's sake . . . I'm no pro but this is ticking me off now.

Can you show us a what your port socket looks like and how it's wired?

Without plugging in the cable into the socket, if you short the two red wires at the socket end, does the flash fire?

If I Short the wires together it does fire, yes. Unfortunately I'm on the road (wifes driving) so I can't upload photos of the socket, but it is a typical radioshack mono socket, I've seen numerous times here on potn.

What kind of cable are you using? Is it from radio shack also? If it is, it's not one of those attenuating cables, is it?

No, you can't use the attenuating cable. What that does is cut down the signal going through it. Good for when you want to hook up the earphone output of, say, a radio or MP3 player to an audio amplifier but not good for connecting a flash to a triggering device.

Okay cool, I'm hoping thats the only issue remaining, I doubt anyone's made this harder than I have! haha

Ill post working results so the thread can archive the instructions and photos, I'll be doing it for YN460ii's in a couple weeks.
