What to do about lens dilema

Big problem

Just bought a 17-55IS for my 450d. Love it.

Now wondering what to do.

I have a 17-85IS which had been my walk about lens and the one I most used. Also have a 70-300IS.

Thinking should I sell above and go for a 70-200L considering f4 with IS as sales would meet some of cost.

Problem is I do like my 17-85 also sentimental as was my first lens. Worries that I may still get some use out of it when I want a light, one lens option with the extra reach.

Will I miss it if it goes.

Or will the quality just move me.

Any other thoughts on which way I should up grade.

Thanks

MaureenPaul

Do it, the 70-200 f4 IS has SUPERB it, you will be moved. If you have the extra cash, but the 70-200 f4 IS first and then decide if you like it before you sell your other lenses.

Sentimental? Don't allow your heart to make decisions. Use your head. My parents refused to sell off a bunch of stock because "your grandfather bought that stock", and it ended up being worthless. Had they sold it when they told me they had it (that was my advice), they would have made over $100,000. Dumb, dumber and dumbest move I'd ever seen.

What is "stock?" An investment in the hope to make some profits from it. Not even a tangible item. Is kind of hard to be sentimental over an none tangible item in which its purpose is to be sold and bought.

Look at us? You think we all started out with 1dmarkIII or 5dmark2 and 3 to 8 L lenses? Upgrades, sold, and bought. You too will follow the same path..:)

Hey, that's what I can do with mine. I have two and no one seems to want them.

When people buy stocks or bonds (well, before the days of eTrade) they got a nice piece of paper that looks old and once belonged to that loved one. It is sentimental, but that loved one didn't buy it so you could frame it on a wall, they bought it so you could benefit from it.

Once you use the 17-55, you will likely never want to use the 17-85 again. I would sell it and the 70-300 to help fund the upgrade you want in the 70-200 f/4 IS. It is a substantial upgrade over the 70-300. I used to own the same lens, and have been extremely pleased with the upgraded 70-200 f/4 IS. It is sharper, with quicker and more responsive auto focus. Also, if you add a 1.4x TC, you get almost the same reach as your 70-300 with the same IQ and AF speed.

That's exactly what I told my parents. The fact that my grandfather had "bought that stock" somehow made it sentimental to my mother. AND, that's what's called making decisions in your heart versus your head. Told them to sell. They didn't. They lost over a hundred grand over "sentimental" feelings. Wasn't me! People can be very foolish...

Sell the 17-85 and 70-300 for the 70-200L and don't look back - it is an amazing lens.
