Anyone happen to know why Lightroom 3.2 nearly won't run at all with this video card?

Latest Drivers (260.99 IIRC) are installed but I'm getting nothing but hangs, freezes and crashes. When it does decide to "run", you can time the adjustment sliders with a calendar it's so slow. 1:1 Zooms never render.

Did some web research and there are references to nView being a bad thing so that's been uninstalled but no change in performance.

XP Home
Core Duo Processor
Zotac Brand nVidia 9500GT .. 1Gb VidRam
4Gb System RAM
500Gb Internal HDD
1.5Tb + 2Tb Externals on powered USB hub.

For the record, previous video card suffered a fan seizure and had to be replaced. It was a third-party 512Mb ATI and I never had these kinds of performance issues.

One other symptom: Without the external drives plugged in, the boot routine is fast and snappy. With the HDDs wired in, the boot routine slows noticeably. I wonder if maybe the nVidia card is pulling too much juice?

Any thoughts or suggestions welcome. My initial thought is to return the 1Gb nVidia and get a new 512Mb ATI...

I only use Nvidia cards (same card as you) and have no problems with L/R or CS5 running open together, now what power supply are you using (watts) as it sounds like a supply issue, I used the very same card with xp pro for a while and a 500W power supply, this should be a good start for this card, I have moved to Win7 and multicore system now with this card I have moved up to a 850W supply, I find that a good steady power supply makes for a smooth running card, Imo.
Hope this helps in some way..

Thanks Terry...

The more I dig for info, the more places I see people bemoaning nVidia + Adobe.

The card that's installed will take an external power lead but I don't think my shop used it for the install. It's being powered off the MB alone and that may not be up to the drill. :(

Open the case up and see if there is a spare power/plug if so some power is better than M/B power as you have found out, good luck..;)

I was just under the hood and discovered it only has a 230W P/S... :(

I wasn't able to determine if there's a suitable pigtail available or not for external power.

I have a hunch the overall slowdown with the EHDDs plumbed is due to the P/S being a tad on the puny side.

Stupid Question: Can you safely drop in say, a 600w or 750w P/S without frying things?

Can you overpower a computer?

Nope.

Look for a 450W or so PSU. $100 or so (before discounts) should get you a quality one...cheaping out can shorten the life of the other components, so don't do that.

Jay,

Here is one for 19.99 after rebate: http://www.newegg.com …82E16817371023&nm_mc=BFUS (external link)

Another one. http://www.newegg.com …82E16817171046&nm_mc=BFUS (external link)

Both of these are decent. If you want to spend some more for a really good one go for this one. http://www.newegg.com …82E16817139004&nm_mc=BFUS (external link)

BTW at boot up with externals powered on it should be slower as that is one more drive that has to post. An external takes a little longer to power up and get going. Mine takes an extra 15-20 seconds when the external is plugged in.

No idea what is going on with LR though.

Yeah, you should be fine to just swap in a power supply with enough juice for your setup, Jay. Wow...a 1g video card and it works at ALL being run off the MB? I'm impressed!

What motherboard do you have in there?

Yes you can drop a higher powerd power supply in and this will help for a good running computer, the better the power supply then better the components will run.

Lets say each feed line from your 250 watt supply is 12v's and you have 10 being used and the PS is running flat out (as your is) then you fit a 550watt your still using all the 12v feed's but it's only running at half the speed to keep the 12v feeds powered therefore not working so hard as your 250watt was, so no fluctuation in the 12v feeds, smoother line feeds smoother running computer..

Power is drawn, not pushed, so put any PS you want in. 250W is probably enough to run most machines, but smaller power supplies can be less efficient. 400-600W is heaps, plenty of headroom.
