i have been out of paying attention to video cards..

but for me... i seem to always buy an xfx video card... i have owned many and sold some... they have a double lifetime warranty!!!!

think bfg does lifetime warranty...

just whatever you get make sure there is a lifetime warranty.... with the double .. i sold it.. they entered a code from me and then the warranty was switched...

also not sure if you are an ati guy or nvidia.. guys i work with are all nvidia...

my current machine is running 2 - xfx geforce 9600 gt xxx edition video cards.. i could do a 3rd as my mobo supports it but i would need new cards...

remember not to skimp too much on the video... if you get a good video card, your machine will offload most of the processing to the card and allow the machine to do other things...

ATI 6870 perfect for "our" needs and decently priced.. Selling like hotcakes now, most out of stock at newegg. Jeez.... (I am an ATI guy, but have gone back and forth in the last few builds. ATI's seem quieter and run cooler IMHO.)

Might want to have a look at the black friday sale today at newegg... 8 gigs of Gskill Ribsaw memory is a great deal http://www.newegg.com …82E16820231311&nm_mc=BFUS (external link)

Whose needs are those? A 6870 is way overkill for photo editing. A 5450 is MORE than adequate.

You need video software that uses the graphics card, both playback and encoding/editing apps. Consult those for gpu requirements, then make a decision.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

But combined with CS5 3D...vid editing and gaming.. CS5 is a pig and the 5450 wont cut it.

Photo editing, video editing, maybe a little gaming, and general computing. Want it to last at least 5 years. Then I will be to old to know the difference!!:D Am retiring soon so expenditures for this kind of stuff will be on the back burner. My p4 3.0 does not cut it for what i want to do. 7D video chokes it to death. HDR takes 2-3 minutes to process. Light room works, but needs to be faster. Get tired of waiting.

The mercury video engine on Premiere CS5 is optimised for the nVidia range - if you are going to be using this software go with what Adobe recommends.

Here's a good video link that will show you why : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lyJxBtQqMg (external link)

None of that was mentioned previously!!!

And while CS5 may be a pig, a 5450 will still function just fine for the majority of users.

I'm still amazed at how costly cards can be today, and how poor the 2D image quality is on ALL of them compared to an ancient AGP or even PCI Matrox card...

So sad no one will consider this in a video card anymore.

If my Mobo had an AGP slot, I'd run Photoshop on one of my old Matrox G400 millennium cards..

If you gents/ladies don't mind, have a look-see at the specs of my two or so year old Mac Pro tower.

Lightroom is running even slower than I do. It's basically unusable, with each photo, after all downloaded, etc., taking 15-30 seconds to load.

Will 8 gb of ram make a big difference on top of the 2 in terms of speed?

Do I also need a new video card? If so, what are my options on video cards?

Thanks in advance.
