Dear forum members kindly help in this confusion:
I have three lenses - Tokina 12-24, Canon 50,1.4 & Sigma 18-200 + Canon eos500D. I use them for portraits, family group photos & landscapes.
Pluses: Love Tokina & Canon for results.
Minuses: Frequent lens changes. No specific walk around lens. Carry all lenses all time. Forced to use Sigma when 100mm or plus focal legth requred (mostly outdoor)

Option 2: Live with present arrangements as Sigma is used <10%. Some time in future sell sigma & buy canon 100,2.8 - In stead of sketching roses photograph them. (Cons: Does not solve basic problem of walk around lens, frequent lens changes etc)

Option 1: Sell Canon & sigma to raise part money to buy Canon 24-105. (Advtanges: like the focal range of this lens plus adv. of 'IS' as I take all photos hand held, it will tremendously reduce lens changes; Con - will miss f2.8 of canon)

My questions
1. Is 24-105 IQ will be at par with 50, 1.4 at equivalent appertures.
2. Is 24-105 IQ very good at 70-105 focal range, compare with 100mm lens.
3. If these are my concerns - which option.

Thanks in advance ss.manak

i mean you should at least have one prime lens to keep for low light situations etc. the F/4 would not really work there

+1

f/4 even with IS you're still going to die horribly indoors, even if you flash the ambient won't be much there.

Yes i love my 50,1.4. However my focus at present is to get a walk around lens which is comparable to 50 mm in IQ. Also in one of technical reviews 70-105 range of 24-105 lens was at only VG & not at outstanding.

Best price/quality walkaround on 500D : Tamron 17-55 2.8 ( or Canon 17-50 2.8 ) + Canon 55-250 IS (or Canon 70-200 f4), cover most of the zoomrange.
24-105L is popular consumer walkaround zoom more for fullframe, should be the kitlens instead of all the junk, I sold it cause of the f4, lesser bokeh for portrets & vignetting.

I had the 50 1.4 in past, good lens, sharp from f2, no complaints for the price.
I have 3 primes & one zoom (28-70 2.8L), I don't worry about changing primes in favour of the best IQ/bokeh with the least distortions.

I have the 24-105L, and love it when f/4 is enough. It's been a very sharp lens for me on a crop body, and provides a nice long reach on a crop as well. But there were enough times that f/4 wasn't quite enough, and I got a 28-70L for that extra stop. Since you have a crop body camera, 70mm at the long end may well be enough, especially indoors, so look into that option if it interests. That lens pops up in the For-Sale forum here and FM often enough. If you want the extra reach of 105mm of the 24-105L, grab it, sell the Sigma lens that you say you don't use much and get a good flash. f/4 plus a bounced flash indoors is generally pretty workable with a camera that handles noise well at ISO400.

And I definitely agree with the opinions stated above about keeping a good, fast prime. Sometimes nothing else but sub-f/2 will do!

There must be a subliminal message in there somewhere...

Got rid of the 50m f/1.4, after noticing I never used it with the 24-105mm on the camera. The 3 stop IS is very good, most times when not enough light I used the flash and tripod.

I have a 40D, and loved my 17-50 but it didn't have enough reach. Traded it plus cash for a 24-105 and I am very happy! Plan to get a 10-20/22 later, but even 24 on a cropped by is wide enough for my taste. You should keep the 12-24, sell the sigma maybe the 50 1.4 and get the 24-105. Still have the wide on the Tokina.

Use your sigma, set it at 24mm and walk around to see if that is wide enough for you. If it is, sell all 3 and keep one walk around. I'll buy the Tokina :p

I have been using Tokina extensively both indoor & outdoor and 70% of these pictures are in 12-18 mm focal range. I genrally keep it on camera .

After reading all above mails, I have been re-thinking that if I had 35f2 I would have used it for walk around (for many years I had film Nikon with 50 mm standard lens). Also 35f2 is affordable without selling anything (wify counts my lenses, if she finds one more, I will have to agree to all those clothes for her this winter:lol::lol:)

However with 35f2, my 50f1.4 will become redundant. Also looking at litterature, 50 seems to have better IQ than 35 (is it).

So now I have one more option of 35f2 Vs 24-105 for walk around lens (In response to some of the mails above - I have sigma flash & I bounce light for all indoor phtos)

I'd keep the 50 and save up longer to buy the 24-105.. f4 isnt bright enough in some situations.

PS: to my above mail
I have attempted to use 20-24mm range of my Tokina for walk around purpose, it is wide in many situations & I have become conscious from litterature that the lens is relatively soft at 24.

Only if we did not have so much open litterature (& this forum), would have happily lived ever after with Sigma 18-200 - sorry PJ
