I have heard a lot about Micro Adjustment. Is that something that I can do it myself or the equipment has to be sent to Canon? I feel that my 100-400 lens is not as sharp as I would like to see; especially at 400. Camera: 5D and 40D.

MA is a camera specific feature, the original 5D and the 40D do not have that feature...

MA was created by Canon to reduce the amount of lenes and cameras returned for OOF.
It came out at the height of Out Of Focus with the MKIII problems.
Do it 10x at various light, subject, focal lengths, apertures and get 10 differ results.

Get the point ???

When I owned that lens I tried to never use it at 400. Always pulled back a bit. Also you need to stop that thing down some but when in it's sweet spot it's a nice lens. Neither of your bodies have MFA feature unfortunately.

No pointers needed...
I owned a MKIII and now own two MKIV's.
I know very well what MA can and cannot do.
But hey thanks anyhow

The focus confirmation adapters I use do not provide an accurate focus at all. Can I use Micro adjust to fix that? For critical focus I tend to rely on Image View (5DII). Sometimes I can get good focus by eye on a well lit subject.

You're right on, from now on I will try to use it at 350 max. Thanks for the tip.

Yes, MA will affect the accuracy of focus confirmation.
I use Live View 5-10X as the basis for accurate focus to establish MA adjustments.

Canon 6D, 1DmkII, IR modified 5DII with lots of Canon L, TSE and Zeiss ZE lenses
