My parents have a PowerShot A560 and when they were on vacation the battery died and the lens didnt retract. Its dead and the lens is out. Putting a freshly charged battery in doesnt fix the problem. I noticed that where the battery goes there is a little flap. If you open that there is a tiny battery that looks like a watch battery.Looks like maybe thats a backup so when ur camera dies the lens still goes back in? Maybe this could be dead?

Anyways, hope somebody can help!

Thanks

That is a back-up battery, but it's not really expected to retract the lens (it's possible that it may be capable of that, but don't rely on it). It's only intended to retain the camera settings while you change main batteries. About all I could suggest is try turning it on with known good batteries in, try zooming and manually focusing it a bit, then turning it off again while gently "assisting" the lens to retract. It may have jumped some gears. But if it's still under warranty, call Canon and have them fix it.

Thank you for your input, however, my fault, I didnt say that I cant get the camera to turn on whatsoever even with a good set of batteries. This camera has always worked great and died very unexpectedly. Any ideas?

Oh, well. If it won't turn on even with fresh batteries, are you sure it actually died because the battery went flat? It sounds like something else altogether went wrong. Were they near water, or in windy conditions? If the camera got wet it could have died abruptly. Or something internal might have failed. In any case, it's probably a situation where it'd have to go back to Canon for repair (or replacement under their Loyalty Program).

Did you check the battery contacts in the camera, try bending them to make better contact with the batteries
