Is CPS worth to get ?

Hello,

I just wonder if joining Canadian CPS is a good idea?
I would like ot have feedbacks from people who has this membership especially Canadian CPS.

For example:
- How much would a lens calibration cost with and w/o CPS?
- How much would a sensor cleaning cost with and w/o CPS?

Cleaning is free at gold level and above. You get two vouchers per year. I find it worth the price for cleaning and repair alone.

I think there's a big difference between USA CPS vs CAN CPS.
Gold member repair discount is 30% USA vs 20% CAN, compared to 60% Platinum USA vs 30% Plat CAN.
There's no mention of free cleaning at all for CAN CPS.

So, what if you don't qualify as a professional? I don't, but would like to join. Am I out of luck?

I want to join CPS as well and I am doing this as my job currently. Do you know how they know if you have the Cameras and Lenses? Do they have to be bought new or can they be second hand?

i don't think they are too critical of the serial #'s. All you have to do is input them in their web application. I used the serial numbers from new & used lenses and bodies.

But from lenses and bodies you owned? I wanted to get CPS too here in Europe, but don´t have bodies/lenses nearly enough.

...just make sure you enter exactly the S/Ns of your lenses and bodies and nobody else's.

I'm already a CPS member, but I say this because someone used (error, faked?) the S/N of one of my new bodies and now I have not been able to register it. They are critical about the numbers, meaning they better be your property, and whoever used mine is going to get it on the knuckles.

PS: I you have a used lens that someone else has already registered, they must first de-register it before you can register it. The CPS database is also used to find stolen/lost lenses of members.

You're supposed to earn 1/2 your income from photography and you need 2 bodies (20D or higher) and 3 pro lenses.

In Canada it is equipment based and not whether you make income from it.

Basically it is a way for them to pre charge you for better service

Nevertheless I paid my $100 and got the Gold.

If you don't think you'll be sending equipment in for servicing or you don't really need faster turn around, then it is not worth anything, unless you think a CPS neck strap is worth $100.

I decided to join as a Gold Member

For the Gold (lower) level, you need to own at least two bodies and two lenses that make their "eligible list". Basically this means all bodies 40D or above and all L lenses. In addition, you list accessories you own that are also on the eligible list, so they qualify for faster repair turn arounds (flashes and grips).

After paying $100, you get a logo hat, excellent logo camera strap, date book, pin, pen, cleaning cloth and a bunch of pre addressed shipping labels so you can send stuff to Canon.

I will admit it is a pretty good strap but, too short, for me so I need to spend extra money to buy extensions for it

Oh ya, the hat. There was also a Canon body cap and, I think a lens cap.

Keep in mind that only your L lenses (lenses that could be registered for CPS) are eligble for the faster turn around.

I had to get the original owner of my 24L to unregister the lens so I could register it.

W/ CPS
- you get 20% off repairs as a gold member ($100/yr) or 30% off repairs as a platinum member ($250/yr)
- you get free overnight shipping with platinum, but you get subsized shipping as a gold ($10 to and $10 from)
-Platinums get a 4 day turn around time with loaner service available
-Gold members get a 6 day turn around time w/o loaner service. Loaner service can be made available if the serviced item takes longer than 6 days.

Sensor cleaning for gold members costs $40 + $20 shipping
Sensor cleaning for plantium is $35 + $0 shipping.
Non members cost $50 + shipping method that you like. Usually it'd be greater than $100 in total.

Lens calibration costs $180 as a non member i believe + your preferred shipping method.
lens calibration costs $126 + 0 shipping for platinum members and 144 + $20 for shipping.

CPS members also get CPS lens pricing here in Canada (i'm eying the 50L mannn...)
CPS platinum members get free trials (two tries per item), and the extended list of rental lenses.

I can't seem to find any info on CPS purchase discounts other than they exist. Would this only apply if buying from Canon directly ?
