MelissaRGB is ProPhotoRGB gamut, with a different tone response curve.

To enlarge on the above - MelissaRGB has the same gamut as ProPhotoRGB but without the gamma correction; the data remains linear, as it is generated by the sensor and recorded in the CR2 file. ProPhotoRGB does a correction to gamma 1.8. The TRCs in AdobeRGB and sRGB are slightly different but correct to gamma 2.2 (approximately).

That added information did a lot for explaining the color space differences Jay, but...when you get to the end of your process and start to softproof, what then?
At what point do you change your color space to accommodate your printer?

I would do that conversion last. I'm going to do a tutorial on printing as well!

I wouldn't do that conversion at all.
Softproof, then use adjustment layers to get the softproof like you want it, then print.

If you printing at home from Photoshop I totally agree, but if your sending it to the lab they usually require a specific icc profile. So in that case I would convert the file as the last step, then save with the profile embedded for the Lab
