Hi All...
I currently use/ have the Nikon D70, SB 800 Tamron 75-300MM ,50MM 1.8, and the 18-70MM DX.....
I work for a Proffesional Photographer.. He uses the Canon 20D, and behold Canon Mark II and Canon 70-200MM IS ( nice outfit.). Can you convince me to go to Canon? I make $10.00 an hour on a shoot, money is not really a problem ( not bad for being 17 years old ) If I were to go to the canon, I would get the Canon 20D, 580 ex, and grip, Later the 70-200mm 2.8....I have used his 20d and Mark II "Hey do you want to try it", which did put a scaring smile ;). I know it has Low Noise, and fast FPS. I shoot sports at day/night and possibly Weddings.SHould I spend $2,000 or is it worth the $2,000 to change?
You all are probaly saying "drr!" ;)

Welcome to the forum.
The other option you night want to investigate since you have Nikon mount equipment already, is to see what Nikon is about to release in the way of the D200 to replace the D100. The rumour mill is grinding away as to what this new beast will be. Some high hopes and expectations from the Nikon camp. The benefit of doing this is that you will already have some glass, and a decent backup body and flash to shoot with. I guess it also depends on the price and when the D200 becomes available (usually a few months after it's announced.....and then a few months of sorting out bugs).
The 20D is a pretty good upgrade from the D70 though, so you certainly won't be unhappy with the transition to Canon. There's a lot of very happy 20D users. But truth be told, both systems allow you to capture amazing images. Both produce a good line up of lenses. I have been shooting on the weekend with a 20D and a (borrowed) 70-200 f2.8L and it is a really responsive and sharp outfit. Very impressed. I have now ordered the 70-200 f2.8 IS.
Best of luck with your decision.

If the experience of using the camera can't convince you, then we won't be able to do so, either.

Bear in mind that the Rebel XT (350D) has very much of what the 20D has at a lower price point. The major difference will be the glass you put in front of your camera. And there is a *significant* difference between the equipment you tried and either the NOINK or Canon consumer stuff (apart from the 50/1.8 ).

The investment you currently have in NOINK glass should not really be a deciding factor.
I assume it to be 20% in total (that is new price, not what you will get for it if you sell it! ) of what the 70-200/2.8 costs that you covet.
A comparable NOINK lens is not going to be much cheaper.

Best regards,
Andy

IMHO there isn't that much of a diff between the d70 and the 20D. I'ld wait for the d200 (or whatever it will be named). Also look at "future camera's": Would you rather shoot with a D2 or 1D2 in the future? Its not a swich from camera, but rather from camera system you are planning....
I think the Canons deliver slightly better images than the Nikons I've tried (1D vs. D1; 20D vs. D70), but I don't know if it's worth the $$$ for you. OTOH, if you're gonna switch, you might as well do it now, before you have too much gear. Be aware of some changes in handling, user interface, kit lens quality (Nikon better), and flash metering (Nikon better). It also depends on how long you're gonna work for this photog.
Since you have the opportunity to test side by side, do so!

If you're going to shoot sports, then you want the 20D with it's 5fps (better yet, the Mark II with its 8.5fps ... but that's a lot more $$$). And if your friend will let you use his 70-200 "every now and then", I'd jump at the canon equipment just for the privilege. :-)

For what it's worth... my partner uses the Mark II and I use the 20D to shoot sports. Both of us have the 70-200 IS 2.8 'L' lens with extenders. Sometimes we use a 35-350 'L' lens which has a lot of range.

Also, better have lots of memory cards for those sporting events. Alternatively, I just purchased an Epson P-2000. It's a sweet piece of work ... 40G hard drive that lets me dump my cards and keep shooting (one card dumping while the other card is shooting).

Good luck!

I really like my 20D, and if I were starting again, I'd pick canon. A good friend has a N.... D70 with their 80-200 VR lens and other stuff. Truth be told, it's a good camera. The 20D beats it on some things, and the D70 wins out on others. For sports, the 20D might be a tad better, but really the difference is not great.

If the guy you work for uses Canon gear then it might be worth swapping systems to Canon if you don't have too much tied up in Nikon gear. I'm thinking that you might be able to use some of his gear, such as lenses and flash, if you're out on shoots together.

The 350D/XT and the D70 are direct competitors. In some categories the XT comes out on top, and in some the D70 comes out on top. The 20D is better than both. Personally, I think you've got a great camera. You'd probably be better off sticking with what you have and practicing. If you NEED a faster/larger buffer for sports shooting than what your D70 has then maybe upgrade, but otherwise save your cash.

Apples or Oranges? I'd be happy with either a Nikon or Canon. I have no brand loyalty whatever. If it does the job well at a fair price then I'll have it. If you're going to stick with the guy long term be worth your while shifting to Canon I suppose. If you're not sure be cheaper to keep what you have. But if you're going to change better do it now before you buy to much Nikon and your camera loses too much value. Can you afford to change to Canon kit?

Sounds like a plan.

Add a focusing screen so that you can actually take sharp images with the NOINK lens on a Canon body
Manual focus on the consumer Canon DSLRs is not exactly easy.

Best regards,
Andy
