are you aiming towards the light source or the camera?

Always hold the meter in front of the face of the subject, aimed toward the camera.

For studio work, I typically shoot with my 17-55 2.8. Not enough time with other lenses to notice trends. It does seem to be consistent between bodies, though (30D and 7D).

It's not a deal breaker or anything. Like anything else, you just learn your equipment and deal with it. I was just curious what your experience has been, that's all.

Most meters have an adjustment capability. If you want to invest the time you can adjust the meter to more accurately read the required camera setting. Since you are using primarily one lens that should work well.

I don't recall seeing anything about that in the manual, but it's probably worth revisiting. Thanks!

hmmm i typically shoot with one light or maybe one main light with a fill light and i aim my dome towards the main light. it keeps me from over exposing my highlights.

there are those on both sides of the fence (strobe vs camera) on this issue. i wasn't asking for help, i was asking the OP with the issue to see what he said so i could offer a suggestion on fixing his problem.

^ did you cut her out and put her into another background? The edges look weird and I can see a bit of white between the fingers. Apart from that great image :)

did you cut her out from a white background? looks like white fringing around the knuckles and parts of the hair.

still, the eyes make it hard to look away and with the light it makes a wonderful image. nice shot!

Thanks gotta touch it up but my eyes are bugging out on me haha. 8 hours of editing for a senior shoot and then another 45 on this and I'm spent. Thanks again for pointing it out! I'm all ears for any other suggestions! BTW this was sooc. Didn't like her sister's expression or the bg in general. Took my time masking but not enough haha

Usually the ND filter is on the lens because you want to cut down on the amount of ambient and flash coming in. Ordinarily you wouldnt want ND filters on a strobe in the daytime as you want to be able to overpower the ambient with strobe power. You could use those to reduce the strobe power when you dont have to worry about the ambient, but if thats the case you can usually just power down and use a modifier.

I think you are a bit heavy on the contouring specially on the shadows.... which-in effect, looks almost illustrative... unless that was your intent.

Thanks for the input Phil, always looking for C&C. I did do a little more dodge/burn than normal and ran a stronger HPF to give it that look. More practice than anything. Here's another..
