I'd like to learn more about shooting with strobes. can someone give the 1 paragraph crash course on why id consider using these over speed lights other than more power. I currently use 3 speed lights with triggers and a variety of modifiers. i do like the results i get but always looking to take things to another level..

thanks

strobes, in addition to power, allow you to use larger modifiers. Larger modofiers give you softer light and the ability to mimic the best natural light on demand. A speedlite might fill a 40 inch umbrella or a 30 inch softbox. A bare bulb strobe can fill an 86inch plm or a 60 inch softbox, a dramatically larger softer light. You can also use strip lights for targeted lighting. Speedlights are fine for certain taskes, I keep a set for certain tasks, but strobes give you more options.

1. Faster recycle times.
2. Strobes with built-in RF triggers (e.g., CyberSync, PowerMC2) eliminate one more battery-powered device to check.
3. Modeling lights assist both focusing and fine lighting adjustment.

After power output, faster recycle times are often the chief reason to choose AC-powered monolights over Speedlights (or other portable strobe systems). I own a set of Elinchrom ELC Pro HD 500s which can recycle nearly as fast as my camera can shoot in continuous mode (when set at minimum power). The second biggest advantage is having far fewer battery-powered devices to check, especially if your strobes have built-in RF receivers. Lastly, modeling lights help to provide quick, accurate AF, and also allow you to place light modifiers with a high degree of precision when required (e.g., adjusting a source-reflection in table-top photography).
