Alien Bees Users Check In (2)

Hi all. First post here. Just wanted to say I really like the scene and the textures in the foreground and doors. Great pic!

Here are a couple of pics I did all with Paul Buff Equipment including Alien Bees, White Lightning and Einstein.
Was going for a dark, edgy look.

I have a question about the second pic. The light color temps way different from the side lights to the light overhead. Was that on purpose? The difference in modifiers? Or the flash changing color because the light up top was set very low?

I ask because I have had color shift using a KC beauty dish, with and with out sock, being a different color than my PCB modifiers. I have also noticed a shift to magenta if the strobes are set to minimum power.

The Color difference was done in post. He had shown me a pic of a different fighter that had a bluish color to his skin that he liked but that guy was a fair skin Asian man. I tried the blue on him and it did not look good so I played around in Photoshop and came up with the Purple coloring that I thought looked pretty cool and he liked.

Beautiful images in this thread. I'm a potential AB user. I'm wanting to upgrade from my Syl Arena TTL cord umbrella setup with a Speedlite 580. Was trying to make some Yongnuo triggers work with my older flashes but they just don't. I'm done with trying, so I'm faced with upgrading flashes or looking at a strobe. In looking at upgrading flashes I ran into the Rovelight, which is getting a lot of attention due to price ($479) and the fact that a battery is built in.

A huge attraction with the Rovelight is the ability for it to be used with high synch speeds, so overpowering the sun using large apertures is easily done.

OK.... the Rovelights just jumped to $599, which I'm not going to do. That brings me back to another servicable option......... an AB1600.

Is it true that you can't reliably shoot these above traditional synch speeds? Has that been a major impediment to your photography? Is an ND filter the only viable way to overpower the sun without stopping down?

The ABs arent great for hypersync or supersync. Using an ND filter is a better alternative.

AB-800 in 51" PLM camera right. 5 in 1 reflector camera left. Speedlight above and behind on YN522C used to trigger AB.
