Pham,
The second is a much better shot.

The lighting on him is kind of harsh.

Would be nice not to have the hot spot on the window of the car.

Time planning for a shoot ahead of time ensures that you have what you need for the job at hand, regardless of the immediate circumstances.
That is advice I got from an old pro when I was a young pup.

He summarized by saying: "the reason for planning is so that when it goes to hell in a hand basket you'll know where the handle is".

i try to plan things out on a shoot before going into a shoot , but when you deal with speeds of weather changes that happens under 5 mins, you try to get what you can get..

we did 4 different car poses (moving the car to a different spot) Father stated that there will be and addition person to help but that person didn't show up.. so moving lights around became a little slower, and the over all difference between the 2 shots is 15mins,the team was working as fast as we can to get as much as we can..

it was windy, so the large modifiers couldn't be used..

so in the end, i got 3 shots liked, lesson learned, is: for outside car shoot expect the unexpected..

here is the photo with out the contrasty action ran, i think i like it better with out the contrasty look...

and the final from this series

a total of 5 lights were used for this shot

1 back lighting was AB1600 with 60 inch softlighter with an orange gel, camera left for the orange glowing look

2 key lighting on Vivek was Elinchrom Quadra with deep octa about 5 feet away held by dad @ 3.0 power boomed downwards

3-4 also had 2 speed lights on the rims held by my japanese Co Workers at Subaru Research Design, (Koga and Kubo - San) they tagged along to see the Car of course.

5 AB1600 with red gel with shoot thru to light up camera right @ full power

alien bee and the speed lights triggered by triggered by the New Cactus V5's

elinchrom triggered by the sky port, skyport on top of the cactus V5' that was on top of the camera

Pham,
I like his face better in the less contrasty shot.
I think you did a great job given the circumstances. The comment about planning was general to illustrate that things always are different than what we thought would happen when we were planning. :-)

Zack, I'm on my MacBook so monitor is not calibrated but she looks really yellow yet the gray sweater looks about right, well maybe a bit yellow there too. Is that your intent?

I'm too tired for this stuff. Thank you. I dropped down the saturation a bit. I want it to have a warm feel, but I agree...it may have been a little too much

Zack, I know how you feel.
Work on a calibrated monitor, get it just about perfect and then subject it to all the uncelebrated monitors connected to the internet.

I like warm soft skin tones. Makes it look like the shot was made late afternoon or early morning. My two favorite times for shooting outside. :-)

I have a monitor calibration kit too....and I never bothered figuring it out. Perhaps that'll be another of my projects tonight. Thanks.

Though, I dont think that was an error of the monitor, but maybe a user error :-)

That seems pretty cool. I just watched a Utube video. Which one do you suggest. I see they have a few different ones to choose from.

Yes she does appear to be a little on the yellow side. I have the Xrite eyeone display 2 monitor calibrator and now thanks to Phil I am looking at xrites color checker.

Get the PassPort.
It is durable, small enough to fit in your camera bag, back pocket.
Make a duel luminate camera calibration profile to load into Lightroom and Camera Raw.
The create a preset that applies that camera profile on import into Lightroom.
The start every studio session with a quick shot of the PassPort. And, if you find yourself in difficult lighting situations take a quick shot of the Passport in the problematic lighting.

X-Rite has a lot of web tutorials that will help you understand the benefits.

It is the best place to start with color managed workflow.

PS: there are a couple of pages on my tutorial site that describe how I use a color checker for fine tuning exposure as well as color management.

The camera profiles a placed into the proper folder by the software (X-Rite or Adobe) so they can be used by either Lightroom or CS5 camera raw.
The presets, can be built to work with camera raw.

Thanks for the comment about the site. I try to add things that I discover and think might be useful to others.
