This guy visits our back yard on a daily basis and I have lots of photo's with him in a straight stance but something about this one I really loved and he doesn't pose this way but once. It looks as though he is getting ready to take off but I actually caught him preening himself.

Question is about the blur to the head.

The photo was 100 ISO, 200 mm lens, 1/320 at f5

He jerked his head real quick so is this movement blur or DOF problem. Do you think it can actually be sharpened? I use Adobe Photo Elements but too much sharpening ruins the picture as I have already applied as much as I dare.

Also, is this a Broad Winged Hawk? It looks a bit different than the other Hawk that frequents our back yard.

BTW, I have yet to see him catch another bird so I don't mind him being there all that much but the place sure does clear out when he shows up. My wife thinks he just wants to be like the rest of the birds and hang out but I tell her he only has one reason that I can think of to land in our back yard for.

Interesting enough I am also working on getting a better picture of the white cardinal. I'll attach that also but I really want a close up of that guy and hopefully he will stay clear of the Hawk.

im no expert, but i would suspect DOF.it appears the tail feathers are closer to the lens than the head is.so maybe bump up the ISO to get a fast shutter speed and stop down the lens to at least F8 to see if it is a DOF issue. still nice pictures though.and im sure there are others that can give a better opinion than i can

Nice shot of the Hawk.. I think it's a Coopers or Sharp shinned...
Either way.. it will certianly eat other birds :)

Try selecting the head in PS,. and applying sharpening just to it..

Also -lightly- try using the burn and dodge tools... very -lightly-!

I tried using the sharpen, burn and smudge tool to see if I could make this guy look better. I think it helped and I guess if you want to spend the time you can do just about anything if you have the skill.

The reason I did not think it was DOF was because the wing feathers on the other side looked in focus. At 1/320 of a second I would also think movement was not a problem but from the time I pushed the shutter button to the time I saw the hawk once again through the viewfinder, his head made the full path from straight ahead to fully under the wing.
