I have not installed the canon cd's yet so I do not know if it is worth using that software over Lightroom or Photoshop. I am shooting RAW+JPG....
Trying to figure out a workflow on a process. I like knowing the flow of things..

currently I copy files off of my memory card via one of 3 ways.
1. From kitchen computer via card reader
2. From laptop usually sitting in kitchen (has built in card reader)
3. From USB SD adapter.

I copy files to my server which is organized by Date\Month#.Month (ex. 2010\11.November)

I am most likely going to stick with buying lightroom (and utilizing photoshop at work if needed) but was curious if there were any benefits to using the canon cd's.....

I think the answers you get will depend greatly on the volume (and style) of work. I dont do much that requires batch processing so I use adobe bridge-ACR-Photoshop. I've heard good things about lightroom, but I am so photoshop centric that I didnt get much out of my trial download. The only other advice that I have is get a card reader rather than using the camera as a download tool.

TeleFragger, you don't specify what format you are shooting in, jpeg or Raw?

One of the big strengths in the Canon software as well as Lightroom is that they both have Raw processors that each are in their own way quite nice. Lightroom, though, also has the powerful organzizational tools built into the integrated interface.

If shooting jpeg, you may want to look initially at using Photoshop Elements, at least at home, because it has a lot of great tools that neither Lightroom or DPP have for editing photos. It will be a good app to have even if you go on to use the Canon software or Lightroom or both. In fact, having all three apps at the ready can be a real plus, especially if you get into Raw shooting.

As far as your basic workflow, of course it starts with having a good efficient way of downloading and saving your images in a useful format. What you are doing is fine, although you can use Lightroom to automatically download, name and Import images if you get a card reader.

But without a card reader the EOS Utilities is probably the best approach, although I believe ZoomBrowser will also connect with your camera as well as a card reader. I'm not sure about all ZoomBrowser can do, but I see it has options for communicating with the camera or card reader.

Keep checking in here1 I make sure I go through all fresh posts here every day to keep up with what people are doing, learn things, and when I can be of some help! It's a great section for learning things!

I'm on a Mac and decided to go with Aperture (LR equivalent). It does a lot of the basic things I need it for while shooting Raw. I'm far from a photoshop master and often take more photos than I feel like processing.

TeleFragger... Your post is far too disjointed, confusing, and laced with unrelated information to understand. Please try to narrow your focus and ask a simpler, more direct question.

I use either DPP + PSCS4 or LR, depending on the image and it's intended use.

I use all three on the list and some plugins on top of that. Enfuse, Topaz Adjust, Nik Filters, they all have their place. Some images come off the camera exactly the way I want them, others need to go through some PP.
