Got this i7 setup from HP...refurbished from HP business outlet

at $503 incl. free shipping / no tax charged (unlike Dell)
.....oops...they charged me tax....oh well....I'm still very pleased.....

..... for $100 more than an i3, it seems worth it.

HP Pavilion Elite HPE-310t i7 860 2.8GHz / 6GB / 500GB SATA
DVDRW(LS) / DVD / 512MB v. card NIC network / 15-in-1 card reader / W7HP-64

The next jump in price from $503 was $70 more for a bigger HD and another 2gb ram neither of which I need just yet...

Here's the site...
http://h71016.www7.hp.com …computing/price-list#HHO1 (external link)

The page opens to mini-notebooks....close that window and open "high-performance desktop" and you'll see what they have now...
The deal I got was the cheapest i7 but there are several other similar configurations under $575

Just an update...the lowest priced i7 today, cybermonday+1, is $545....

I just want to say that I got the i7 today...it came with AMD radeon rather than the nVidia I'm used to....it'll take some time to straighten it out, but....
This refurbished machine looks and operates like-new...very smooth...
BTW...I was charged tax...oh well....still, $535 is a great deal for the i7

Sounds like a nice deal for a monster quad core like that though!

For those always looking to get the NEXT next great cpu this one is a dead end...the next i7 up a grade (and by $200) is upgradable to the next generation MB coming out next month...I'm not one of them...I'm just going to be happy with this puppy for a good long time...

You know, after decades of building PCs for sale, and for myself, I have never Upgraded a Motherboard without also upgrading the CPU.

By the time your ready to swap the heart of the system, it's a good bet the CPUs around dust the ones that used to fit your old Mobo,. so I'd never worry about this.

Likewise, it's been over a decade that I;'ve upgraded a CPU without also swapping a Mobo.
The last time a CPU only swap was worth while was back in the days of the Pentium II and the BX chipset, where a BX board could triple it's CPUs clock speed having started life with a PII 350, and jumping up as high as triple that speed with a PIII @ 1GHz... in about a years time.

Likewise the Athlon XP chipsets that allowed going from Sub 1GHz performance to over 2Ghz..

This was the last era of the "CPU Upgrade" without swapping the Mobo too IMHO.

I almost feel almost over the top with this machine since none of the programs will use all this power...even my old PS6 and Elements7 won't access the GPU, so the 512card will be quite enough...

I typically upgrade by buying a complete "new" system when all the parts of the system are improved by 2x-3x....not just the cpu but memory, video, and HDD...and that's easier, and cheaper if I stay a "state" or two "behind the curve"....and this machine is state of the art for one more month :)

(My $1000 vaio, one of the 1st TVPC media centers, (2.4hz/1GB maxxed/240GB with 2 HDDs, and built in HDMI output that enabled it to work on my 1st HDTV 6 years ago) remains a useful DVR, with only having to change the DVDRW from 2.4x to 22x three times over the past 8 years....)

wow, there are some amazing deals on the refurb site. I am so glad I saw this thread. I am going to order a i7 980 system on Monday now. I know that I don't need all that power, but the processor alone in worth $999 and they are selling the whole system for $1287. It seems crazy not to jump on it.

That's great....I hope it works out for you...and...
I hope that the mouse they give you is better than the flimsy one that comes with a $500 PC....that one is worth nothing more than the space it takes up in the box of spares I keep around.
