Good Bag while skiing/snowboarding?

We are buying a T2i kit for a nephew this christmas. He intends to photograph and video snowboarding and skiing. I would like to get him a bag (more like a backpack) that will hold the body with one lens (18-135), a second lens, and perhaps a flash and a few accessories. Extra space for snacks gloves, etc. would be nice.

Any advice and/or experience would be appreciated.

Tiny bit off topic, but you may want to think about an extra battery. Depending on how cold it gets, battery life will be shortened quite a bit(and video is a killer, too). It is also recommended to put the camera in a sealed plastic bag when you bring it back into warmer temperatures to avoid condensation.

works pretty well for snowsports. It's easy to swing in front of you for the chair lift rides.

Thanks to all for the the replies. And thanks for the added tips. I have not been on skis in twenty years so its easy to forget the difficulties of removing a backpack for a chairlift. Sounds like the sling is the best option for easy adjustment for the lift ride.

And thanks for the battery advice. One is on order.

After considering all the options we decided to go with a sling. Although I really liked the packs for the extra room we did not really like the idea of getting him a bag that might not suit his needs. The sling should get him through the season.

I still really like the packs. That fStop gear looks serious..........

How GOOD of a snowboarder is the recipient? If he falls a lot, bringing a camera on the back or side is a bad idea, and something that holds it around mid chest might be safest for the camera!

I use a Dakine Sequence when I ski. I have no bother on lifts and I'm a big guy (6'2", 280lbs)

I am surprised people would suggest a sling (to each is own I guess) but I would run that one by him before committing to it. I would not let the chair lift dictate your decision, nearly all bags are 'chairlift compatible'.

i carried a lowepro top loading bag on my chest the last time i was up in whistler. i think a backpack is suitable also. anyway you look at it, carrying any type of bag will throw off your sense of balance, especially one loaded with gear. i think you should really let your nephew decide on what might work best for him based on his skill level.

One thing that concerned me with slings is the unbalanced asymmetrical load. Seems packs would be a better choice for sporting. Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

I would say he is an advanced/expert boarder. Not sure if that helps on the fall direction, but most of the falls I have seen are pretty ugly but isolated to terrain parks and 1/2 pipes. I would assume he would not have the equipment on while pushing the limit.

This season he will probably be on the mountain, 2-3 times per week and I expect him to probably start backcountry/ powder trips this year. Some of his friends are bad influences. However, I would expect them to take more extensive (survival?) gear (less camera gear) in those instances.

BTW, he is in Utah and if the early snows are any indicator, its going to be a great year. So I'm told.

I was a ski instructor for 35 years. Ben J has posted good info here about skiing with photo gear.

I made a classic mistake. (trip to Vail.) Used a belt pack (I'd call it a fanny pack here without getting into trouble. ) The only way I could carry all my gear and ski well was to slide it in front. That way I could work out of the bag easily too. Just a thought.
