I talked myself into it. Ack!

After seeing user galleries from here, and some sample images I was just amazed at what this G3 can do. Being new to photography (digital and non), I have a lot to learn.

After browsing here, I went ahead and ordered the lensmate 52mm adapter, a hoya double coated linear polarizer (everyone seems to say this linear will work fine), a hoya uv filter, and while I was ordering I got the 52mm wide angle lens hood from lensmate as well - not sure how much I'll use the lens hood, but given the overall price of everything else it was $9 that I was willing to gamble.

This should hopefully cover everything for now.

It seems like that 420ex flash is a must have too - can someone explain why and if a novice like me can actually utilize these benefits it provides? I'll try the search option too since I'm sure it has been covered, but if someone has the time and doesn't mind, a reply here would be great too.

This forum has been a great help - thanks.

hypokondriak,

If you mean; in comparison to the internal flash, here are a few functions you can utilise:

1. More power than the internal flash. Hence, will allow flash pictures to be taken at a greater distance.

2. The 420EX has a tilt head, which allows the flash to be bounced off a variety of objects. Hence, a much more pleasing light. eg. Less harsh, softer shadows, if using a white surface. Alternatively you can experiment with color surfaces

3. The 420EX is further from the lens. Hence reduced chance of Red Eye.

4. The 420EX can be connected via an Off Camera flash cord. This gives you directional light, which is often more pleasing than light coming from a source close to the lens.

5. The flash has it's own batteries, which means you are not using up the G3s internal battery to power the internal flash.

6. The 420EX has a much larger lens (surface area) than the internal flash. Hence I would expect to get less harsh shadows on direct flash photos. My theory anyway. Should be easy to prove.

There are other benefits, but I would be getting into the advanced user category. So maybe there's enough to get you started. Besides I have not had a good play with my 420EX yet.

Bruce

I got my G3 about two weeks ago and already have over 140 photos on my handdrive that I am pleased with. But I know that in a few months when I get more shots I will think of some of these ones as crap. It's an awesome camera but I still want a tiny camera like the s400. Maybe once my bank account recharges though.
