Hi guys this is my first time to post here. Well first of all I would like to say thank you to all who contributed their works and ideas, this site really helped me a lot with my photography.
I live in Japan and I have a canon 40d with a shutter reading of 96,375 to be exact. This is my second dSlr camera and this is a gift from my wife ( who loves to be photographed :D ). I just need to know from you guys the cost of replacing the shutter assembly, the camera is still working but I shoot a lot everytime I came from work. The expected lifespan of the canon 40d is said to be upto 100,000 shots. I know it is a little bit early to be worried but, you know, I just want to know to be prepared :D. I also called Canon here and told me to bring or send the camera to their office.
I love this camera and I would really love to see it usable up until it can. Thanks in advance. God Speed to all!

Hello jprspy,

I've no idea how much a new shutter for your 40D would cost in Japan but, especially because you are so polite, I'd like to welcome you to the forums.

The only time to worry about your shutter is when it actually dies.
It's a mechanical component and it can fail at any time - 2k, 20k, 50k, 100k, 200k - it doesn't matter.
There are people here that have had them go well over the 200k mark and others that haven't made it past 20k actuations.
Over the years, I've replaced 3 shutters - two in my 10D and most recently, in February 2010, my 1DMkII.
The first 10D shutter went at about 160-180k, the second at about 120k.
My 1DMkII shutter let go at 187,737.
So I have no complaints - the 10D's were both above the expected life and the MkII was about where it should be.

Use it until it dies and then replace the shutter or upgrade.

In Australia, depending on the body, a replacement shutter is around Au$600.00 - $280.00 for the part and $320.00 for labour.
Depending on supply and demand, I'd expect different countries would be different prices.

Since the 40d was manufactured in Japan, I would assume you have the best tech and price than most of us. But like mention above, if it ain't broken, don't fix it.

As mentioned above if it aint broke, dont fix it. But it might be time to consider options beforehand. If the cost is more than half of the used value of the camera, it might be worth purchasing another newer camera. I'm not sure whether canon-Japan offers a loyalty program so you can upgrade rather than repair like the one that is offered in the states. Another option would be to sell your older camera, with full disclosure of course, and apply that cash to a newer model.

I had a 40D that needed a new shutter at 55k, others I know have over 100k on their shutter. You just never know.

I can`t say how much it costs because...touch wood...my 40D is still going strong after a couple of years though I know someday it will conk out, just the way it is but until then it`s my main squeeze and I still love the pics it puts out. I would like to upgrade my 20D to something more recent but honestly Canon is not building what I want for the price I`d like to pay so I wait...even though I have no complaints on the 20D either. Hopefully both will last until Canon builds the camera I want to buy. We have a Canon office in Sendai so when I eventually do have to bring one or both in for servicing I`ll let cha know.

The nice thing is, once you get a new shutter assembly you should be good to go for a long time.

OH well, then you can tell me how much it costs. Unfortunate that happened but you kinda had a premonition it would.

Ohayoo! guys I went to canon yesterday and unfortunately it is the shutter assembly... they also told me the price for the service and everything that would be replaced within the camera... I backed out :D. well, to tell you the truth, i really wanted this baby to fixed but unfortunately the price was just too high for me...

guys, help here... I am planning to buy a new camera this month, I am thinking 50d (upgrade? :D ) or the 5d (the NON-latest one :) ) love to shoot portraitures of my family and sometimes love to use my wide angle lens as well for landscape, but most of the time really love portraitures.

Thanks guys...

^ a 5D would suit your needs quite well.

Kind of ironic your shutter died haha.
