I just received a new 24L II from B&H - date code is UY0902 which according to the table at TDP means it was produced in September 2010. However, the rear lens cap has the square EF-S mount mark as well as the round EF mark. My 24-105 and 70-200 lens caps just have the round EF mark. I remember my 10-22 had a rear cap just like this.

Has Canon changed their lens cap policy? Do I have a secondhand lens? Seems unlikely given the timing but who knows.I only got home from work at 10.30pm today so I haven't had time for more than a few test shots. No obvious problems so far but I'm a little concerned. Any feedback would be helpful!

Hm, most of (if not all) of my rear caps have both of these marks, and I don't have any EFS lenses.

You have absolutely nothing to be concerned about. The caps that came with my "L" lenses that I bought new with my new 20D several years ago have both a circle and a square in them.

I find it hilarious that Canon even bothered to put either of the markings on the rear lens caps, though, because the rear lens caps can go onto any of the lenses in three different positions. There is no reason to line up either of the marks with any lens' markings to put the rear caps on.

Oh good - I wasn't sure as I've bought my lenses over a number of years so if (as it appears) Canon has changed their lens cap style then it's fine by me !

Good to hear - my 85mm f/1.8, 100mm f/2.8 don't have the square, though I've just realised that my 50mm f/1.8 does!

I also wondered about the purpose of the square when I got my first (and only) EF-S lens, the 10-22. Not having noticed the 50mm f/1.8 cap, I associated it with EF-S lenses only!
