Thoughts needed...

I'm aware most people on here won't have a clue what to recommend just as I don't, but I am looking for a decent camera for a 9 year old. He has a little crappo camera that his grandmother got him for a few bucks but it sucks horribly.

Now, I'm not looking for some high quality stuff here, just something he can use to take decent pictures with that is basic and kid friendly. The one he has is made for kids but the quality is worse than the first cell phone cameras. He mostly takes pictures of us, his friends and his toys... he tried to take photos at disney world this past week but none of them turned out even remotely viewable.

and yes... i know how to use google. Just curious if anybody here has any kids that they have gotten a good little camera for.

Thanks

I don't have a specific recommendation. I'd just go to your nearest big box store and get him a point and shoot that fits your budget. Probably out of budget but one of the current crop of water and shock resistant offerings would seem to be perfect for someone younger.

By going cheap i just mean... not overspending on something a 9 year old doesn't need. Dont' want to waste money on a bunch of features. Just want a basic camera that takes decent quality photos. I don't think he pixel peeps. :)

As a point of reference, my son had a rubberized toy camera that he really seemed to enjoy. I decided to get him a decent Canon point-and-shoot (SD 880 IS) for his 8th birthday. He was overwhelmed (happy). He's taken excellent care of it and still uses that camera about as much as I use mine. He pretty much sticks to P mode and uses it for video, but he even tries other modes at times. If there's a real interest there, and the kid is the type to take care of things like this, I'd say it might be worth investing in something decent. My son, now 10, does incredibly creative things with his little camera.

I had an Olympus and it was a great camera, my 9 year old uses my old G3 and does a good job with it.

Something shock and water proof would prolly be a good idea =) (But still tell them it is delicate)

Son: At computer pixel peeping

Mother and Father: Walks in

Mother: "OMG My son is Pixel Peeping!"

Son: "This isn't what it looks like!" Quickly tries to zoom back to screen size.

Mother: Cries and runs off

Father: Runs after mother and tries to comfort her "It is ok! It is normal for photogs his age!"

I'm giving my 9-year old our Canon A540. IMHO, it's perfect to help her in learning how to take different kinds of photos (outside of the green box). If she breaks it or drops it by mistake, it will become part of the Canon Loalty program... :)
