What about a used superzoom ? It looks like a D-SLR and coupled with a really long focal length will keep a 9 year old interested !

What about a Canon D10? Its water proof down to 33 feet and its shock proof up to 4 feet. It doesn't break the bank at $249.00 shipped from amazon.

For a 9 year old, I would definitely go with someone low priced, under $99. 3 of my nieces and nephews over the past 5 or so years have beat up/broken, lost, dropped in a lake, had stolen a few cell phones, several digital cameras. I can't imagine why my sister keeps buying them digital camera they don't take care of. Oh, and these are teenagers, not 9 year olds! Don't spend more than you are ok throwing out the window :)

keep checking deal sites like techbargains. They have had a name brand camera deal for under $80 every day this week, but they usually sell out. You might also check out the refurb selection at Adorama. They had a lot of Nikons last time I looked that were $200-400 just a couple years ago and are now $75-100.

I might also recommend looking for something with a zoom that does not telescope. That is a fairly delicate mechanism that is common failure point on compacts. A camera like this is what I am talking about where the lens is contained in the body and does not extend when you turn it on: http://www.adorama.com/IFJFPZ70BL.html (external link)

$9.99 for a digital camera:
http://www.jcpenney.com …d=opera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8 (external link)

To be honest, I wouldn't be too happy with the camera listed above as a 10-year-old. At the time, I was taking apart computers (and getting yelled by my mom lol) and I was pretty capable with electronics (transferring the VCR, Nintendo 64, tape player and surround sound from one TV to another). But that's just me.

The better question to ask is:
What is my budget?
Here's one for sub-100 including tax if applicable
http://www.jcpenney.com …d=opera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8 (external link)

How long do I want this camera to last?
Kids learn pretty fast; don't get something that's too simple that he will toss aside after a few clicks. Conversely, don't purchase a dSLR (yet lol) which would be too complicated. He will also toss this aside due to its complexity and the last time I checked, dSLRs are not purchased with 'disposable' income either.

Craigs List always has point-n-shoots for cheap... At least in our area.

But... It is possible to pick up a cheap camera if you watch the sale papers. I picked up a Powershot A3100 for $89 at Target this week. I don't think I'll stop using my 30D, but the pictures from the little guy are pretty decent...

Thoughts needed...

I'm aware most people on here won't have a clue what to recommend just as I don't, but I am looking for a decent camera for a 9 year old. He has a little crappo camera that his grandmother got him for a few bucks but it sucks horribly.

Now, I'm not looking for some high quality stuff here, just something he can use to take decent pictures with that is basic and kid friendly. The one he has is made for kids but the quality is worse than the first cell phone cameras. He mostly takes pictures of us, his friends and his toys... he tried to take photos at disney world this past week but none of them turned out even remotely viewable.

and yes... i know how to use google. Just curious if anybody here has any kids that they have gotten a good little camera for.

Thanks

My 7 year old nephew runs around with one of these, Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2. He beats the heck out of it and it still works fine, the best part is they can swim with them and have fun in the water with it breaking.

Canon S5 maybe? I would probably go for a cheap oly tough. Or you could see if you can find a s90 on the cheap.

Maybe a G9/10/11

I bought my 8 yr old nephew a rebel. He loves it and takes very good care of it. He drug my 20D around for two years and did a great job with it. Canon didn't mind cleaning it for me. :)

I reckon a G5 or something, bit older/cheaper. I've used one for years, my dad got it when it came out. Has full manual mode and everything too, so good to learn on.

I just bought my 7 year old daughter an XTi with a 50 1.8 lens. I probably will sell the 50mm lens or trade it for an 18-55 IS lens.

My daughter uses a 350D with an 18-55 kit lens. I usually set it to ISO 800 for her, and put it in Av setting. She just got runner up in a state-wide photo competition. We do a lot of wilderness photography, and she takes outstanding care of the camera and lens.
