I think the Canon D10 is very good for a kid... I was able to use one recently... I even dropped it into the sand, took it snorkling etc... and photos are decent.

A used Nikon D40 with 18-55?

And an even better gift would be to teach them all about photography over the next few years :)

get a used canon g9 or something. very cheap, high quality, full auto, and it has more control so when he starts to explore photography more, he'll have a tool to help him.

Just getting my 7 year old into the hobby, picked up an XTi and IS kit lens, and I will be working on getting her out of green box mode over Christmas.
