You have better choices of good lenses with Canon. And camera bodies depreciate in price faster than lenses.

The D3 was Nikon's answer to Canon's 1DS Mk II. The D3x to the 1DS Mk III.

It is a full frame, but what do you want/need from the Canon side? If you don't want full frame, then what lenses would you like? Flash and/or studio lighting? Tripod and head? HDV DSLR?

i would like to get a full frame equal to the nikon performance wise.

It's somewhere between a 5D MkII and a 1D MkIV, features wise. Tradeoffs either way.

As mentioned, for the price, the 7D would be in that ballpark. Since you already have a couple 50Ds, getting a 7D would be a nice upgrade ;)

I would just sell the D3 and the 50D and upgrade to something like a 5D II or better

Well, if you sell the D3 and one of your 50Ds, you could be in the ballpark of a 1Ds2 -- it has the performance of the pro 1D series and is full-framed (and less expensive than the 1Ds3:)).

Sell the D3. If you are after build and AF performance, get the 1DS Mk II. But if you need video function and higher resolution, get the 5D Mk II.
