What's so good about L series?

I've read a little about the L series lenses and all of the fancy words just translated to "Blah blah blah". Can anyone give me an idea of what the L series is like in simple terms?

The optics on an "L" series are usually superior to the consumer grade lenses from Canon and other manufacturers. "L" series lenses are physically better made. Some of them are weather resistant.

What Cadwell said! Beside their superior optics, they're also luxurious. They feel better, often look better, work better, have higher resale values, and come with extra little tid bits like lens hoods and lens bags. There are many fantastic lenses that aren't L's, but in general, L's rule.

Don't even ask. Don't even think about it. You may become an L-oholic and inflict financial ruin on yourself and your loved ones...;) ;) ;)

It's like the difference between a Corolla or Camry and a Lexus.

See Belmondo's signature ...

Seriously though, a lens like the 300mm IS L, which I so wanted to love, are superb pieces of design. Excellent build and materials throughout, the hood is a joy, the IS magnificent and image quality about as good as it gets. But there are L's and L's and I think, for me anyway, it's more helpful to compare/contrast with other brands offerings before making a decision.

Build quality, optics, weather sealing(on some), durability, not going to need to be re-chipped.

I have got the two cheapest L lenses and they are different class. The biggest difference I have found is the clarity/sharpness.

I guess you can say the same thing about "L" lenses being Canon's also... :)

Ditto what everyone else has been saying. I had the opportunity to borrow my friend's 70-200 f2.8 L and everything about it is nicer. Faster focus, sharper, faster lens (wider focal), nice things like having an adjustable tripod mount, etc. Plus you just look like you're one of the cool photographers with a white lens :D
