Looking good Jay!

Thanks...

Unfortunately, I may resort to doing the entire Thunderbirds appearance in B&W. :(

Looking at shots from Tyndal AFB in Flordia, where the T-Birds went after Luke, well, they got the weather we should have had!

Would have been great to have the blue skies with some nice clouds.

Still a great shot though Jay.

That shot (#6) baffles me a bit.. How did you drag the shutter to get everything all nice an blurry.. yet keep the horse in focus...? Tracking him?

Have you been hanging out with Dean at the race tracks to perfect the art?

Yes Kristy, Jay is correct about the "second-curtain flash sync" where the exposure is like 1/10 of a second or 1/15th of a second and the flash fires at the end of the exposure allowing all the ambient light to register as well as stopping the action with the the light/exposure of the flash.

However, Jay is incorrect in that the Carousel is turning and I am panning with the horse, but as stated above, using a very slow shutter speed and a flash with the "second curtain sync" function enabled.

I'm not sure where I learned this technique (sorry wasn't Dean) but I have used it with different degrees of success in all kinds of situations.

It's fun to try it with all kinds of things, like painting with light and other goofy things.

Second-curtain flash at the end of zooming with the lens. Don't think the carousel is turning.

Sorry, Jay yes the carousel is turning. No lens zooming.

Nice Doug, I really enjoyed that series. For some reason it seems to almost tell a story. Almost an interpretation of what you saw artistically while wondering through the festival.

Very nice again...

Thanks Kenny. I appreciate the positive feedback.

I like the red bull shot, nice colors.

Well it is good to see that someone is trying to be creative, and solve one of these perceived problems. As an actual solution, though I think it falls flat. Using a subscription based service works for companies like Netflix because they don't make the content. They are strictly distibution. The studios hire the director, actors, and all other parties involved in making of the film, shoot and edit the film, and actually create the media that Netflix distributes. The huge amount of costs were transfered to another party before Netflix was even involved. The equivilent in portrait photography would be like renting your clients online galleries that are only valid for limited amounts of time (provided, of course the photographer didn't have any costs associated with creating the content, editing, hosting, etc). Besides, if I put myself into my customer's shoes, I'd hate this structure. I don't want to hire someone for a timespan. I'd want to hire them for a specific reason, which is really an ad-hoc process.

You offer “shares” of your time to numerous clients who would want to ensure access to your services throughout the year at a predictable cost.

Just coming up with this off the top of my head...

So say you offer 500 shares and each share is an hour ...so 500 hours of shooting time. You average daily rate right goes for $150 an hour but since you are offering a discount for prepaid hours... you sell those blocks @ $75 an hour. That's $37.5K The client would get 50% off buying the hours in this manner. They can use them anytime during the year or gift the hours? Mom and Dad buy the bride a 10hr block... Mothers to be buy 6 hours and spread the sessions over the year documenting the kids...etc. Of course you have to give a lot of thought to your taxes, gas, equipment, time shooting/time processing... etc. But.. this is almost like a Groupon deal where you don't give Groupon 50% of the cut?

I can't see a true subscription based business for the independent photographer. If you were a large studio and you said for $29.99 a month... we will shoot you for "X" amount of times in the year with a savings of "X"... it might work if you can turn over a large volume of customers..something like the Picture People if they are around... but with a subscription?

I don't fully see the big picture in all of this...

Hmmmm

we're shooting a wedding Saturday (yay - cash money!)

but for those of you with 'nothing' to do, you might go to Falcon Field for their 70 anniversary commemoration...

trains, planes, and automobiles... ;)

The event, which is free, will include static aircraft displays consisting of helicopters, historic aircraft, experimental aircraft and other general-aviation planes.

Boeing, MD Helicopters and the Mesa Police Department will also have helicopters on display, along with the Mesa Fire Department's airport fire truck.

Other exhibits include a classic car show, military vehicle display, model railroads and a radio-control aircraft display.
