As interesting as that video was, I had to laugh at the Christmas tree of Nikon Speedlight's Joe McNally used to shoot in the desert. I believe he has 15 SB-800's.

That's just ridiculous, even he would probably opt for a nice Profoto set up if he didn't promote Nikon.

I have one 580 EX which I use so little I still need the book if I use it in anything but the simplest way.

Of course. It was all in the name of promoting Nikon.

He could have gone out there with just about anything he wanted, so it wasn't like he thought about it carefully and then decided that the best way to light the shot was with 15 SB-800's. LOLOL

One and I use it for snapshots only. For my professional work I generally use five studio flash units that have modeling lights so I can easily see exactly what I will get when they fire.

one main disadvantage studio flash have is that they don't have ttl control correct me if I'm wrong...another disadvantage and I could also be wrong on this is that they don't have HSS...not really useful in studio but if you bring your studio light out on a bright sunny day the HSS could useful....

I'm weird - I love my 5D Mark II:D, Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS Mark II8-), Sigmalux 50mm 1.4, Manfrotto 190CXPRO4 + Manfrotto 804RC2, Gitzo GM3551 + Manfrotto 486RC2

Actually If I remember right it was an exercise specifically to work with the speedlights. I semi remember reading the blog posts when it happened and they realized they had like 12 speedlights all together at the time so they went out with the express purpose of overpowering the sun with only speedlights. So no, it was not a "speedlights are the best choice" but more of a "lets go see what we can do with only speedlights".

That sounds vaguely familiar but I still see things like that as Nikon (or any brand, for that matter) promotion. So many of those videos just come off like informercials and to some degree a fulfillment of obligation to the companies that drop gear on their doorstep.

I thought the same thing. But never did not hear about Nikon capitalizing on it. But it is still a guess if it was or not. There were there to speak at Gulf Photo, but you never know...

Oh, and to get back on topic.... I have 4 speedlights.

6 total; two 580EXII's and four 550EX's. I generally use three at a time, half of that is backups, but I also have a location lighting plan that calls for four of them, three of which are slaved.
