How many speed lights do you have...

I have 6 if you include my studio strobe. Mainly I have bought one at an time.

Lots of AA battery packs for the speedlites, 3 VMLs for the E640s and the CL4500 for the CL-180

The 600s get most of the use for speedlite applications, the others are kind of left overs, but get used when doing product shooting on table.

The CL-180 is for beta testing, I'll add some CL-360s when available, they fit nicely between speedlites and monolights for me.

The E640s are used mostly for fashion, portraiture, other work where big modifiers are the norm.

Lots of modifies and light stands.

4 right now seems good for me, But I'm really liking that new Cheetah light from the bare bulb thread, that might be my next one.

I sold my 550 ex and 430ex1 and bought 2 580ex2, 2 430ex so I can control the power directly from my camera using my yn622.

I also have 3 photogenic strobes.

seven.... It's pretty rare that I'm using more than 3 or 4 at a time... but it's nice to have the option to add a few here and there as needed.

Is that equal to 2 x 580EX II? Or did you mean

The guess the general answer is the more the better of cause up to a point....I'll probably put it at say 8-12 speedlight...over 12 is probably overkill...

few example where more speedlights helped....
for hss and high fire rate since each speed lights can be set at a lower power to archive the same output as 1 speedlight...This setup is about as complex as you can possibly get (and expensive) full ttl control using radiop popper

Use a lot of constant lights for indoor work like my Linco Flora, LED lights (300LED ring light and 2 160LED panels), and DIY Joe Edelman type setup.

Only because I've never sold anything. I never set out to buy or collect 7 battery strobes but the 550's are absolutely ages old and still work perfectly. Same for the STe-2 which was purchased along with the 550's. That was when the EOS5 came out with eye focus ... folk remember that one?

Having said that the above was purchased when the UKP was strong and kit was much cheaper then than it is now.

Currently just two - a YN560 and YN560II - firing with Phottix Stratto II's. Really been meaning to add a couple more 560II's.

I have 7. 580 EXii, 580 EX, 430EX and 4 Nikon SB-28's. More than I need. I plan on selling the 4 SB-28's and sticking to 3 speedlites.

I have two speedlites, which is one more than I need. If I need more light than a single 580 EXII can provide, I pull out the studio strobes.

Truthfully, I only use a speedlite mounted in the shoe if I'm carrying a camera around at night. Dealing with slow recycle, limited output, AA-batteries, etc. is a PITA. Since I don't shoot events, I try to stay away from speedlites. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the talented event photographers that can create some astounding images using a bag full of speedlites. They really know how to use their equipment, and they have managed to deal with the recycle and AA-battery shortcomings. My hat is tipped in their direction.
