Well as the title asks. Anyone heard of a Prinz circular polarizer filter? I have one that is brand new. I know it's from the film days. The manual in it looks like it's from the 70's or 80's. Is it any good? Or should it be replaced with better glass?

probably nothing good. Never heard of that brand. For me, its HOYA or its nothing. Cokin only for efx filters.

Its probably not worth much. Does it even fit any of your lenses? I wouldn't dream of putting cheap glass on my f/4L or any of my good glass... but if you want something in a pinch for the 18-55, which sucks anyways... go for it.

Yea it's a 67mm so it fits my 70-200 and my Tamron 17-50mm. I don't even know how often I'll use it. I guess I'll try it and see what kind of quality pics I can get.

If it is very old, are you sure that it is a circular polarizer and not just a polarizer?

Digital SLRs and autofocus SLRs have some issues with regular polarizers while manual focus film cameras mostly did not. The issues can show up in metering and autofocus in some circumstances.

If my memory serves me right, Prinz was a cheap off brand. Don't quote me.

Prinz was the name used by Dixons UK (at one time, the biggest photo retailer in the world) for their own brand lenses and accessories, back in the day. They were never what you might call high end. It is almost certainly a linear polariser, and uncoated.

Pop it on your 70-200 and shoot with and without at 200mm, which will magnify any degradation. You may be shocked :( Cheap polarisers and long lenses are not a good combination.

They were sold in Canada so I doubt it was their private house brand. Doing a Google search, it seems the company still exists.

That's a different Prinz. The Dixons sub-brand was a long time ago from the 70s (before that other company existed) and they made all sorts of stuff - lenses, filters, cameras, flashguns - including particularly nasty SLRs called Prinzflex. Mostly over-branded Zeniths and Chinons

Could be although they are into optics and filters. Companies change over time.

Nevertheless, Prinz was sold in Canada in the 70's. I go waaaay back ;-)a
