Hey all....looking for some advice here.
I have a family of 4 that would like a shoot done......down near the beach. It's husband/wife/son/daughter. The son is like 1 foot taller than everyone.
Any suggestions on how to keep dad at near center focal point and decently include the son?

thank you

That the son is tall won't affect your depth of field. As long as everyone is on the same PlANE. If someone is 2 feet in front of, or 2 feet behind, THAT matters. (or 2 inches, depending on aperature). That someone is taller or shorter makes no difference. I'm not sure if that was even your question, but there tis.

I appreciate this.....the question was more along the lines of not having the son stand out as much I guess.. I think I have it now and am not to worried about the son taking away impact from the dad....Kind of want the dad centered.

Ok...without too many excuses as to why this was not executed to it's fullest potential.....last minute change of plans due to weather...Put me inside with hardly any space....like 6' to set up my light, stand, boom and had to use 17-55. And the clothes don't quite match the intent....!
ok...other than that, they are my friends and I enjoyed practicing with them..
here are a few

Well that wasn't so bad as you thought it would be. They are good photo's. I don't really like the PP on number one, the photo is great and I would not have used so much vignetting. That is just my opinion.
You had said that you were worried about the son upstaging the dad...so then he wears a striped shirt LOL. So much for that idea huh. I don't know what you did to the last shot but I had to do a double take
because I thought there was something wrong with my eyes. Then I put on my cheater glasses and what did you do, apply some PP to try to soften the photo. It looks blurry so I would try to recover that image. So that is my take. I love the composition, lighting and the posing.
So many people get hung up on Christmas themes and I think it is just fine to wear what ever the family is most comfortable wearing.
Actually I think you are just pulling our legs here....I just looked at your website and you have awesome talent there MR!

Thank you so much!
If I may....what are Cheater Glasses? I need some.
And yes, you are right, I blurred the last one too much. It was late and I was tired....I will re-do it and tone it down some.
We are planning another shoot....this time with Seasonal clothes at least and I will use my much smaller BD rather than softbox......Thanks again for your critique!

Hahahaha.....I went to the Eye Doc because I thought I needed glasses but he told me my eye sight was just fine, so I then asked him why I have trouble reading then to which he replied all I need is a pair of cheapo cheaters. They are just glasses that magnify. Cost me 17 bucks for a neat pair from Shoppers drug mart of all places.
I look forward to seeing the next family shoot! So don't forget to post them.
