Picture Styles (and other stuff) in LightRoom

RAW is the RAW data, correct? So, assume I set the Picture Style to whatever settings and shoot RAW. Now, when I import the CR2 files into LR, do you lose the Picture Style settings?

Raw data is the straight data from the camera sensor after being run through the Analog/Digital processor with only some minimal "processing" without a Picture Style, White Balance or Sharpening applied. All those things are settings that Canon places in the file metadata as proprietary values.In other words, Canon software such as Digital Photo Professional can read the settings in a Raw file and use them as a "starting point" for you to begin your develping, but progams like Lightroom and Camera Raw (Photoshop) can not exept for some rudimentary "stabs" at things like White Balance.

In the early versions of Lightroon/Camera Raw, that was it -- you started out with a rendering that came out somewhat "flat" -- in fact, quite a bit like a jpeg that was shot in Neutral or Faithful -- no Contrast, Saturation, Sharpening, or special "tone curve". Some custom made presets for various cameras made their way to the net but it wasn't quite as useful.

Now, Adobe has developed a series of profiles for popular cameras that can be accessed in the Calibration Panel and set up to be camera-specific and be applied automatically according to your preferences. They attempt to "mimic" Picture Styles so they come with the familiar names, but it is still up to you how to use them and whether to use them. You can apply a profile on import or as part of your processing. Different people have different preferences here.

And, some people get discouraged by the disparities. I like to recommend that people at least install the Canon software and use it as a "reference" as they are getting a handle on Lightoom. That way you can mess around with stuff like Picture Styles and White Balance all you want but still the Raw data is available for Lightroom to play with and vice versa.
