I am sure this question is asked often, but I am thinking of buying another camera. For the last 3 years I have been a G3 user and am wondering where to go next.

Sticking with Canon there seems to be a vast amount of options.

If the Pro 1 is priced in the UK as it is currently in the US (meaning cheap), that's certainly a real option. Beyond that, you're into DSLR territory, which I haven't yet ventured into, but I'm close.

Thanks Dcains,
This is truly the question, to keep with the G series or should I now move to a DSLR and then which one?….What would be the benefits of moving to a DSLR?

Colin,
some food for your thoughts...

I've been very happy since I upgraded from my G2 (used it for 2 years) to the 20D early that year. 350D was not available at this time, so today I might do a detailed comparison whether the additional features are worth the additional money.

If image quality and speed are more important for you than small size, then it's a DSLR.
If you value portability above all, then you might be happier with the G6 or Pro1.

Best regards,
Andy

I had (and still have) a G3 and was very happy with it. Now I moved to the 20D which is obviously better, less portable and much more expensive... It all depends on what you want: fast reactions and high quality, or low price and high portability...

So if I go DSLR you would all advise me to keep the G3 as my more portable run-around!

That was my initial reasoning ...

... but I haven't used my G2 much since I got my 20D early that year :o

Whenever I think that an event warrants taking a camera, it also warrants taking the 'big camera'.
I have a Tamrac Velocity 7 slinger bag that contains 'the important essentials' that I normally take with me.

'The important essentials' in my bag are the 20D, 50/1.4, 28/1.8 and - since last weekend - also the 80-200/2.8 L .
All with lens hoods (dismounted). So one could say that it is not really a 'tiny' bag.

Best regards,
Andy

Just to let you all know that I finale went for the 350D for my needs the price won the argument for me in the end I just could not justify the extra cost of the 20D.

Oh yes I am very happy with the 350D and enjoying!

You'll love it!
Which lenses to go with it?

Andy

Just as a little added note..... I too upgraded to the 20D.... however, even though every event I shoot is done with the 20D, my G5 always tags along.... I still capture great images with it, and at times, the added bonus of being able to grab strange angles (i.e. over the head shots, etc) make the G5 with the swivel LCD monitor a must-keep camera. Even when the G5 breaks, if it ever does, I will gladly replace it with the Pro1 or the next level G-Camera.

I agree 100% with Gary. When you have a DSLR, you should always have a smaller camera as well. Actually right now I have four cameras -- 10D, G3, Panasonic FZ5, and Canon S410. I just can't bring myself to get rid of any of them because they all serve a purpose. My wife thinks I'm crazy but she doesn't mind so much when she gets ready to do a scrapbook layout and she asks me for pictures ;-)a

A DSLR is large and heavy and remember, you can't take great pictures if you don't have a camera with you. I have at least one camera with me all the time. That's what I bought the S410 for -- I keep it in my pocket wherever I go.

Hmmm .... Don't have my 20D with me ALL THE TIME, but within 1 minute walking distance.
Sits in my office cupboard/car/nightstand or is on my back together with 30/1.4, 50/1.4, 80-200/2.8L and sometimes 28-75/2.8.

Best regards,
Andy

Pro 1 vs G6

Am I missing something? The Pro 1 seems similar in style & features to the G6, but is 8megapixels rather than 7. I see the Pro 1 is a little heavier. Aside from that are there reasons to even think about the G6 over the Pro 1?

Price, size, price and price ;)

The Pro1 and G6 are both great cameras but IMHO the Pro1 doesn't offer enough over the G6 to command a $250 premium. The picture quality from both is virtually identical.

Just a happy and sad note to finish!
I Bought a 350D which I am very pleased with and although there will be possible times when I will miss the G3 I sadly sold it to a friend today. I hope he gets as much pleasure from it as I have had.
