Thanks Deputy for the suggestions. I hadn't thought about it like that, I will install the plugin you mentioned and lock down my site as best as I can.

While I appreciate (and applaud) a good backup routine you need to realize that if you do get hacked you will more than likely be serving malware to your visitors, be heavily penalized by Google, and possibly be dropped by your host.

At worst your site will host malware linked from other sites and spam email, still get penalized, and still face the possibility of being dropped. In that case an infected site could server malware to tens of thousands. Not a good way to make friends and impress people.

A web server is just a computer, but unlike the computer in your home you are not the only one who would be affected.

I have reasonably complex passwords and up to date software, but no salt, and I use the built in password. I see no need for table prefixes. I've been fine for 3 years so far, no problems at all. I understand this stuff pretty well, I'm an ex developer now IT solutions architect. Precautions are good, but you don't need to go over the top.

Good suggestions though, and people doing a new wordpress install should probably do most if not all of them.

The presenter does an excellent job of explaining each step, even if you are completely new to this kind of thing. If this is new to you, I'd suggest that you listen to the entire video first. This is a great way to learn how to use WordPress' content management capabilities before you attempt to do anything for real

The template in the example is not necessarily suitable for a photography website; however, you can add other "plug-ins" to make it better. For instance, you can add a media management plug-in that will allow you to upload selected images to your site and even run slideshows. You can also purchase other Theme's, including some that are specific to photography websites. Just do a Google search for WordPress Photography Themes.
