I'm getting ready to sell or trade my 40D and it's grip, and I'm at a loss of whether I should go to the 1D Mark II N or go all out and get the 1D Mark III. I really like the convince of the toggle and set button, but this will also be my first 1D series camera. I'm currently shooting with the 40D as my back up, and the 7D as my primary. I do a lot sports photography, but I also do a lot of photojournalism work too. I'm looking at the 1D series because of the speed, but also because of the 1.3x crop to give my lenses a more full frame feel. The ability to back up photos as I shoot is a bonus. Those are some of my thoughts on them, but what are some contrasting ones to go one or the other?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

The switch to the MkIII will be an easier transition.
Yes you will be overwhelmed with the plethora of options and settings, but at least the menu structure and controls will bear some resemblance to your 40D.

That's just one reason to consider sending the extra for the MkIII...

For me it would depend on what lenses you have. The 1D3 is nearly twice as expensive as the 1D2N so if you wanted to put some money into lenses the 1D2N is the better option.

@pagnamenta...I have the 24-70mm f/2.8L, 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, 50mm f/1.8 II, and the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6, but unfortunately that's a 1.6x crop lens. I'm kicking myself I didn't get a wide L, but it was an impulse buy.

@CyberDyneSystems...I had a chance to get one at B&H at a killer price, but held out because I was considering the 300mm f/4 IS. Of course when I make the decision, it's gone, and all that's left are 1Dmk2Ns. Nothing against them, I'm just trying to make sure I get the right camera...

1D3...I thought it was a big jump from my 1D2 to the 1D3..the ISO performance on the 1D3 is so much better. on the II i really never liked going above 800 that often. on the 1D3 i will shoot ISO 3200 and not even think twice. The menu is much better, More cross type focus points, Microadjustment. plus the 1D2 batteries dont last very long and will drain themself in like 2weeks. I have let my battery from my 1D3 sit for like 6months and it still was atleast half charged ready to go..the battery in the 1D3 seems like it never dies

The Sigma 10-20mm will mount and function on a 1D,.
You will get at least as wide a shot, if not a good deal wider with it on a 1D, even of you have to crop out Vignette .

I used my 10-20 on my 1D2 it seem to work without the hood pretty well from 11mm up..That was INSANELY wide.

You've already got a rather good lens collection. I'm not sure what you like to photograph, but if you don't need/want to upgrade/purchase additional lenses, the 1D3 seems like a great option. As mentioned already, it's a superior body that has significant upgrades from the 1D2, mainly for me high ISO capabilities. If it's not a matter of budget, I believe you have your answer. If it is a case of budget, then you know the pros and cons of both and can make an educated decision. At the end of the day no professional will recommend a 1D2 over a 1D3, it just comes down to what you feel you need.

I have a 1DmkiiN and love it due to a few reasons it allowed me to get a 85 mm 1.8 and a 24-70 2.8 "L" with the body for less than $2500.00
I think these are a great investment and the depreciation is almost out !!!!

You would be hapyp with either but the "N" is a hell of a deal also approx $1K cheaper

5D MK 3//24mm "L" 1.4// 16-35 "L" 2.8 // 24-70 "L" 2.8 MK2// 35mm "L" 1.4 // Canon EX600RT flash // Fuji X-E2
35m 1.4 // 14mm 2.8 //Fuji EFX20 & Fuji X100S

I have had nothing but good luck with my 1D3, and like others have said-think nothing of shooting at high ISO. I shoot mostly sports with it. One of my friends also shoots sports with the 7d. We are at some of the same events and I have to say, the 7D is capable of keeping up with my 1D, which I didn't think would be the case.
