Are you firing the flash right at the subject or bouncing it? Tried a diffuser (I.e. Sto-fen?)

Red eye has nothing to do with the lens.

I suspect the issue is that the flash is being directly flash at people, I would strongly recommend bouncing off a wall or diffuser like a lumiquest type thing. Or a umbrella or softbox, something so the light isn't beaming directly into their eye.

Red eyes do not relate to lenses although with the narrower angle of view of tele lenses, the probability for red eyes to happen is increased.

Like said above, you need to avoid using flash close to lens. You should not use the built-in flash. If using an external flash mounted on the hot shoe, you'd need to bounce it off or use a diffuser. You can also use an off-camera flash set up to increase the angle between flash and the lens.

ed: sorry it took me some time to post so it came through after your response. If you bounce the flash, you should not get red eyes. My wife has a huge tendency for this problem, but like you I use a Sto-fen omni bounce and I never get a problem that way. Do you still set the flash head at 45 degrees when using the diffuser? You should even if using the flash outside or where there's no ceiling above your head.
