My son stepped outside the house and ran back in to let me know, "Dad there's a Praying Mantis on the front step." I repositioned him on a cabbage palm and shot a variety of shots. This one I like the best. Used 70-200 2.8 IS mk2 and Canon 500D.

That is a good question; I've been wondering about the discolored eye. The mantis did not seem to be real healthy. I'm wondering if a bird took a dive at him or he took a fall. Any way about a day later the poor fella met his fate. I thanked him for letting me take his photo.

Nice closeup. I was interested in the eye too, so I looked up mantises. They only live at the most, and in captivity, for 14 months and all will die by winter. I always thought they were ver neet insects. I gre up on a farm and found out early on, they were harmless. What I didn't know till just now, they evolved from cockroaches. LOL
