There is a thread here (sorry but don't have the link) about the higher voltage (1.65) of the NiZ batteries frying the flash. Apparently the voltage is too high. The problem occurs when there are several flashes in a short span.

I didn't intend to imply suitability (or not) for use in flashes, I was merely commenting that NiZn was an emerging rechargeable battery chemistry. Is this the thread you were suggesting?

I can't seem to find it. There was more than one person in it who said that those batterires fried their 580EX.

Before switching to NiMh recahrgables, I used Lithium. Then I burned my hand switching batteries which were not only hot but bulging.

I now use PowerEX 2700 and happy with them.

The Sanyo Eneloops, do you have to buy Sanyo charger or will any charger do?

How long do the batteried need to recharge and is it ok to use a 1hr fast charger?

I can't speak for other flases but the 580EX II won't let you fry it. I popped 100 full power photos as fast as the ready light would let me with Powergenix NiZn installed. It got hot at about the 90 pop mark, but it slowed me to a crawl until it cooled again, resuming with the same speedy recycling as when I first started. In real use it's not an issue at all unless you think your camera is a machine gun.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

While you can charge Eneloop batteries with other chargers, you should NOT use rapid chargers if you want them to last. In my opinion, it is best to merely use Sanyo's chargers. I have three of them, and each can charge four AA or AAA cells at one time.

I carry at least three sets of four pre-charged AA Eneloops when going on a shoot and take a couple of the chargers along as well. I've never had to charge any of them on the job, but I am always prepared.

One thread which I read about 'frying 580EXII with NiZn' seemed to speculate that the thermal protection was apparently defeated by the very rapid rate of fire with NiZn recycle times, and that it was profiled for slower battery chemistry. In that same thread, Canon fixed the OP's flash at no charge and reported a 'circuit board with a break', and that is a mechanical failure not associated with heat.

That'd be here.

I think I've read somewhere they're rebranded Eneloop. Can anyone confirm?

Sorry if this has been asked and answered previously ... no time this second to read the whole thread.

Does Sanyo or another company make a charger that will hold eight or more Eneloop batteries at one time??

I might end up using three CP-E4 battery packs, thus needing the means to recharge 24 batteries in a reasonable amount of time without using every outlet in the house.
