There's something about the 5D Classic that makes me want to downgrade...

The 5D Mark II is a great digital camera and all but the files produced are exactly just that - they end up very "digital" looking. Whereas the 5D classic has a more film-like grain to its ISO range and the tonal range to its pictures just makes you fall in love with it - it's hard to describe. Am I the only one who notices this?

Poeple don't consider it a classic for nothing.

What I would miss (personally, because I chimp on occasion) is the better LCD and ability to MFA if I were to go from 5d2 down to the 5d.

You could always just resize your files to 12mp (or can you just dial it down to take mRAW on your 5d2), and if need be, add noise in post-process. ;)

i am like you and love the look of the classic files the blacks are really nice and film like, also the colours from this vintage sensors are really nice

i also had a 1D mk2n that i liked equally, i presume that the 1Ds mk2 having the same vintage sensor as these other two bodies will produce this same film like feel :D

12 mp just seems to be the sweet spot with DSLR's. That may be why Nikon has kept so many of its cameras in that range. Unfortunately, Canon got caught up in the more mp is better race.

I don't get the fascination for film grain... there is nothing natural about it...

I know, right? I'm just sayin'...

I like the files of my 1D IIn, they DO process differently and have something of a different feel to them. Not sure if the 1D II has a less aggressive AA filter, like the 1D classic does, but it seems to have similar traits, even though the 1D classic is CCD instead of CMOS.

Anywho, I guess I got the best of both worlds :)

Right, which is why Nikon has the D3x and the D3100 and the D7000 right? And what about medium format DSLRs? There is nothing special about 12MP just like there is nothing special about FF sensor size.

Note: I am not putting down the 5D, I think it is a great camera.

Funny this topic came up. After I got my 5D2, I packed up the 5Dc for sale. But then, decided to sit on the sale idea.

I don't know if anyone here has compared the IR images from DSLRs with those using Kodak HIE film. DSLR IR images are just too smooth. Kodak HIE is special in other ways, too but I cannot see myself scanning films a lot. Besides, after selling my 1v a few years ago, I'd need to buy another EOS-1x to use IR films. Well, as a possible solution, this morning I ordered a 77mm R72 filter to use my 17-40 + 5Dc. I previously used a 58 mm filter with a 24 f/2.8 but none of my current lenses can use it anymore. 24 f/2.8 is not actually a great lens for IR but people report 17-40 is. I'm hoping at ISO 1600 with my 5Dc I can get some grainy effect as I used to get with HIE.

So there, an excuse to recommission my 5Dc, hence keeping it!
