I just saw this app online. Never heard of it before.
Anybody have any experience with this?

I'm surprised there aren't any responses yet.
Though I must admit that I see no "urgency" to have GPS. Just an added luxury, I guess.
Anybody feel otherwise?

As an "added luxury," I see it as just that, and rather frivilous.

I can appreciate the desire for travel commandos to utilize such an app, but as I don't use my mobile phone for everything under the sun, and the fact that it costs me a huge wad to do so, it's just a high-cost addition to my normal mobile phone useage.

I simply organize my shots into appropriately-descriptive folders on my computer at the time of downloading them, and it doesn't cost me any further data-transmission fees for the ability to do so, and I don't have to be signed up for one of those 'everything' mobile packages, which saves me an awful lot of money.

Sorry to rain on your parade Steve, but this is how I see it, in my own perspective.
It's certainly not for me, though it may be surely desirable for a lot of others.

Hmm...not raining on my parade. I've never had a use for GPS for my camera...so far. Though one day, I'm sure I will!! Things seem to work out that way, don't they?
I just thought that an inexpensive iPhone app (I think it's $1.99) might be the way to go. At least for starters. Wondering if anyone had tried it...and with how much success.

(The one negative that a friend mentioned to me so far is that it may be dependent on phone reception. And not every photo site/destination has great reception! Good point??)

Seems also dependent on having an iPhone, which I don't care to pay for, as well as having all sorts of GPS-enabled stuff on any other given phone, which can cost the subscriber a small fortune, depending on service-level plans and their place in the world.

No thanks. I have a Motorola i890 handset, and it's perfectly fine for my needs.
I have no need for the additional data charges for receiving emails and web-surfing,
as I do it all for free, thanks to the neighboring building's wireless service for their tenants.
Seriously, if I wanted to surf the net and check my email on a tiny display, instead of on a full-size Samsung monitor, I'd be doing it with my mobile phone, instead of with my desktop computer.

While there are those who relish in doing "everything" with their mobile phones, there are those like me who would much rather it all play out upon a display screen which is at least 19-inches large.

Hmmm....you seem to have some passion regarding the iPhone. I'm not particularly interested in that feedback. I have an iPhone and use it very appropriately for my purposes and my budget. To each his own.

I am more curious about whether or not this app is a worthwhile feature to access GPS for Canon cameras that don't include it.

I'm sure the Motorola i890 is a great phone. Had Motorola's for years and years! But I don't think these types of apps work on that phone, so your feedback is frankly unwarranted and inappropriate to the specific topic which is "Anybody tried the gps4cam iPhone app". Why not jump on the Apple Forum and express your opinion regarding the iPhone? Perhaps they'd be interested in your phone uses and preferences there.
By the way, I don't surf the net on my iPhone. Though I do use it quite a bit for photography! It's actually a great photographic/creative tool. For example:
(http://blog.chasejarvis.com …phone-app-book-community/ (external link))

And $1.99 is hardly a small fortune. Especially to one with the glass and gear you have. We all decide where we want to spend our resources, don't we?

The other thing to remember about most phone-based location services (like this) is that they drain your battery pretty fast. A separate GPS unit will typically give you an uninterrupted 18 hr. or more of tracking. If you get one that doesn't do anything but track (no screen, maps, etc.), they can run a couple of days.

Sorry about being so harsh earlier. I suppose I'll never understand the desire for these "do-everything" mobile devices.

No problem....
I was skeptical, too. Till I got one!
Really!!

(Again...check out the creative photography capabilities. I see lots of photographers are starting to explore "iPhoneography." Pretty cool stuff.)

Thanks for your understanding, Steve.

Another valid point mentioned by Jon is that these features will indeed burn through battery power in something of a hurry. Even a Bluetooth phone will drain a battery more rapidly with Bluetooth enabled, if my own is any example. I've forgotten I had Bluetooth enabled a few times, and I found I needed to recharge in half the time than if it was left disabled.

I'll still pass on the additional purchase and service costs of a device such as an iPhone, all the same.

If only Lightroom had better GPS support I might explore this option more. Otherwise, I'm just not excited to jump through hoops to add a feature I'm just not that excited about. If it were simple, I'd do it, but it's just not worth the trouble for me yet.
