I love motor racing. But mainly pinnacles of motor racing, from an engineering point of view. Bog standard simple racing like NASCAR (to many it isn't but compared to other series & rules, it is), doesn't do anything for me.

ROFL....your naivete' is showing if you think it is simple. That is part of the problem....they have brought in too many engineers and tried to build a better mousetrap. From a technological standpoint, NASCAR is almost on par with F-1. These days it is all about the machine....with cookie cutter drivers thrown in the cars and turned loose.

F-1 has lost much of the shine as well....now the only excitement comes in qualifying. If you win the pole, you win the race....barring a mishap on the starting grid.

If you want exciting racing these days....WRC is one of the few options left. The American Le-Mans series can be entertaining, but all too often one car runs off and hides on the competition....the excitement usually comes from a race for position further back in the field.

Ahhh, Dan.... I am not being naive. I was saying NASCAR is simple in comparison to other series.

Naturally compared to some others series, NASCAR is complex, but purely from an engineering standpoint, it doesn't rank up too high.

I will heartily agree with you that F1 has lost a lot of shine of late, simply because of the costs and sheer speeds drivers are able to do, they are being smothered. I do enjoy F1, I do enjoy WRC, Le Mans series, etc. I am all for pushing the boundaries of engineering.

As for NASCAR on par with F1, I cannot see that at all, nowhere near on a technological standpoint - but that is all to do with the amount of £££ that is poured into one series and not another.

If you want exciting racing these days.....

I don't think any professional sport is as exciting as they once were. From baseball, football, racing, it doesn't matter. So much money has poured into professional sports that no one is willing to take a risk. It seems like ROI and maximizing performance is what it's all about.

For real excitement, it's the local track with good ol' boyz out there in their pieced together race cars that are exciting. Almost no money, dented up cars, no fancy pain jobs, but lots of heart and love for the sport. That's exciting.

Its one reason why i watch college sports over pro at times. College baseketball especially is much more physical than the NBA. The NBA had this in them in the 80's and 90's. Money came in and stopped it all.

I think if you compared the engineering staff at Hendrick Motorsports or Penske Racing to any other form of racing you would be shocked. The cars that NASCAR places on the track today are entirely custom manufactured....there isn't a single component found on one that would be found on a vehicle from GM, Ford, Toyota or Chrysler. As for the money invested....nobody wants to reveal the actual figures.

Like JJ said....the only real racing to be found these days happens on Friday and Saturday nights in small towns across the globe.

It's the same with college football but becoming less so as money plays such a huge role. The smaller schools are still a lot of fun to watch. Too bad that are not on TV.

Money has made a mess of most sports. Paying one person more than the GNP of many smaller nations to play a game is insane. They keep saying you have to pay that kind of money to keep the talent pool up.....BS! If you said you couldn't earn more than 1 million a year in any sport....do you honestly believe that these tops athletes would choose to go to work changing tires at Firestone? Most of them are doing the only thing they know how to do.

This all started because contracts became public knowledge. Once a player sees another make x millions then they should make more. Hide the salaries (after lowering them of course) and the problem goes away!

Yep, but I did most of it in the reserves. It's still enough time to get a retirement and all the benefits that go with it.

Actually the title was an accident. Now I have to live up to it...

Visits from the TF are never accidents.

Dan still wants $1m for his photo!!

Yes, the figures some people earn are astronomical. in the 90s, the UK referred to the US' sporting wages as "telephone numbers". We've certainly caught up! But the numbers are mind boggling!
