Hey gang!
Well, of course, finally he gave me my card back and sauntered into the building and I headed back to my car...back to an expired meter and a parking ticket...
Grrr...

Sorry to hear about the ticket. They get you one way or another, don't they? :p

One other place you don't ever want to get a parking ticket is in Oakland. I stayed too long at a restaurant for dinner and the parking ticket cost me $72. I hope yours isn't that expensive.

Ouch!

I normally look for free parking but in some parts of town that just doesn't "fit the bill". Oh well.

Thought I may ask this question over here too.

I recently put all my photos on two external hard drives so that I could take them all off of my laptop. I was running out of space. Soooo everything was working fine until today when I wanted to do some processing. One of the hard drives won't stay on. It powers up and then in a few seconds goes off all on it's own. The other hard drive I get as far as putting in the password to unlock it and thats where it ends. Computer isn't reading it any further.

I'm just stumped. I'm not very smart when it comes to computer stuff and was really scared to put all my pics on externals for this very reason. That something would F up and I wouldn't be able to figure it out. Now, one of the externals is brand new. The other is a couple years old but I have hardly used it until the past couple months. They should both work fine in my opinion. Any help or suggestions would be soooo appreciated.:)

Ooops, the newer external is now working. Good grief. So, I want to know is it better to leave externals plugged in to the computer so they boot up every time you boot up your computer? Or is it better for them (they last longer) if you unplug them when they are not in use?

Ohhh the external that doesn't stay powered up is still not working.

I leave my main external all plugged in so the computer "sees" it when it boots.

The other three get plugged in as needed because they draw too much power and it makes the boot routine slooooooooooooooow.

ok, sounds reasonable. :) Any ideas why my one external won't stayed powered up?

Is the one that won't stay powered up your older one or your newer one? They can over time have problems, and in time die!

Hey gang!

While I'm waiting for some pics from today to download, I'll tell my sordid tale...

I had business with my daughter in our little downtown today, so I brought stuff for some Urban/street photography while I was waiting for her. I had put enough coins in the parking meter for a while, so I went out with my 5DC and my 24-70 to shoot some spring flowers and some little architectural captures, which I like to share with our "Urban Fragments" thread. All good clean fun!

So, I work my way around the area -- churches and government buildings and various structures, and was having the proverbial time of my life and toward the end of my parking time I came to the "Federal Building" office building -- it has some stuff that interested me so I proceeded to get some stuff, ending up in front of the main sign, and I got close enough up on the grass to get what I felt was a pleasing composition and fired away...

Sounds all cool until you register that at this point I was standing on government property, nothing against the law, but of enough interest to bring out a guard who began asking in a very friendly way what was up, and again very nicely explained they are perfectly happy with folks taking pictures of the buildings and such just not security entrances and such and I happily said we're cool, and all was well...

That is, until he got the idea that "just in case" he would ask for my ID. I shrugged "sure, why not?" and, being as I was on government property sure he had the right to do that. And then, he figured just for security's sake he would radio my info in and things got more, well, no problem but I began to be aware of the time passing by. This was not a quick radio in -- it took time for the dispatchers to run my nefarious ID for whatever reason, tick, tick, tick...the friendly banter continued, but several times I said "I sure hope they hurry things up!"

Well, of course, finally he gave me my card back and sauntered into the building and I headed back to my car...back to an expired meter and a parking ticket...

Grrr...

Saturday night I went to levee by my house to take pictures of the moon rise over the river. There is a ferry at the spot I picked and I know they're jittery about cameras there because I've already had a discussion with the police there about photographing the ferry and the doc. The thing is that this is the only place i could get an unobstructed view of the other bank.

I set up my tripod and camera and waited and sure enough within five minutes an ambulance pulled up and the driver got out and came over and started asking me questions as if he were just being friendly and curious. After a few minutes he went back to his cab but was on his two radio before he even got in. Now the person in the passenger seat came out and sat on the bumper about two feet from where I was set up. She starts a conversation and before you know it she's asking me my name and if I live nearby.

I told I knew what she was doing and that i expected it but thought it would be a policeman who would be doing it. I asked her if she wanted to see my ID since I had it in my shirt pocket because I knew I would be asked for before long. She said no and sat there for a few seconds looking uncomfortable then got back in the vehicle and they pulled away. Within a minute the police showed up. He asked me what i was doing and told him about the Super Moon and that I knew about not taking pictures of the ferry and why I chose this spot. He said ok no problem and would I mind showing him my ID.

By this time a family had showed and both parents were carrying point and shoots and were busily shooting away. Nothing was said to them. Now it was getting dark and there were a couple of other people there with cameras including one other guy who had a telephoto lens but no tripod.

Now a Parish (county) work van pulled up next to me and the guy starts asking me what I was doing, and telling me that I needed to leave. Without looking away from my camera (it was right at the critical first minutes) i asked him who he was and told him that I had already talked to a deputy and I wasn't going anywhere. He tells me if I didn't stop taking pictures he was going to call the police. I told him if he didn't leave me alone I was going to call the police and sue him for harassment. Then i asked him who he was and why he wasn't hassling the 5 or 6 other people who were taking pictures 10 feet away. He left.

WTH?! If I was a terrorist I would have just walked right up on dock and taken pictures with a cell phone or something less conspicuous than a dslr with an 8' lens on a tripod from 400 feet away.

This stuff is getting out of hand.

It's the older one that won't stay powered up. But, I haven't used it much. I plug it in once every few months to put backups of pics on it and that's it. So really, it hasn't run much at all. Maybe that's the problem. It's stuck from not enough use.

Could be, actually. EHDs can stop working if they don't get used often enough. The lubricant can solidify if given enough time and then the drive won't be able to spin.

Paula, when you say it doesn't stay powered up, do the power lights go off altogether?

Yep the power lights and everything goes off. I can push the power button, lights go on, computer beeps, couple seconds go by and then the lights go off. bah. I unplugged and plugged all the cords in and out too. So it's getting juice. I even plugged it into a different outlet.
