I know, I know. I'd feel the same way. But, your comment hit my funny bone. I'd be saying a few unpostable things right now, too.

I would. But, why is it a pain? It isn't that difficult to copy photos from one drive to another.

Saturday night I went to levee by my house to take pictures of the moon rise over the river. There is a ferry at the spot I picked and I know they're jittery about cameras there because I've already had a discussion with the police there about photographing the ferry and the doc. The thing is that this is the only place i could get an unobstructed view of the other bank.

I set up my tripod and camera and waited and sure enough within five minutes an ambulance pulled up and the driver got out and came over and started asking me questions as if he were just being friendly and curious. After a few minutes he went back to his cab but was on his two radio before he even got in. Now the person in the passenger seat came out and sat on the bumper about two feet from where I was set up. She starts a conversation and before you know it she's asking me my name and if I live nearby.

I told I knew what she was doing and that i expected it but thought it would be a policeman who would be doing it. I asked her if she wanted to see my ID since I had it in my shirt pocket because I knew I would be asked for before long. She said no and sat there for a few seconds looking uncomfortable then got back in the vehicle and they pulled away. Within a minute the police showed up. He asked me what i was doing and told him about the Super Moon and that I knew about not taking pictures of the ferry and why I chose this spot. He said ok no problem and would I mind showing him my ID.

By this time a family had showed and both parents were carrying point and shoots and were busily shooting away. Nothing was said to them. Now it was getting dark and there were a couple of other people there with cameras including one other guy who had a telephoto lens but no tripod.

Now a Parish (county) work van pulled up next to me and the guy starts asking me what I was doing, and telling me that I needed to leave. Without looking away from my camera (it was right at the critical first minutes) i asked him who he was and told him that I had already talked to a deputy and I wasn't going anywhere. He tells me if I didn't stop taking pictures he was going to call the police. I told him if he didn't leave me alone I was going to call the police and sue him for harassment. Then i asked him who he was and why he wasn't hassling the 5 or 6 other people who were taking pictures 10 feet away. He left.

WTH?! If I was a terrorist I would have just walked right up on dock and taken pictures with a cell phone or something less conspicuous than a dslr with an 8' lens on a tripod from 400 feet away.

This stuff is getting out of hand.

Because of 9/11 all the petty government bureaucrats that have no real authority think they can get away with harassing people engaged in perfectly innocent pursuits. Unfortunately, DHS is responsible with all their exhortations to be vigilant and watchful. What they're really doing is enabling the incompetent and ignorant...

So, start the copy right before you go to bed and let the computer do all the work while you're asleep.

Paula, getting back to this, a nagging thought comes up -- do you have a backup drive that you are utilizing? With a growing library with various external drives and such, you really need a solid backup drive in place so you can regularly make a copy of all your files.

I recently had one of my externals start behaving badly but everything was backed up so I could plug in my backup drive and be up and running while I troubleshoot the library drive.
